Tires Diff between R1 and R4 tires?

   / Diff between R1 and R4 tires? #21
Thanks guys. One of my tractors has turf tires. The latest one I got has R1s. Both have loaders. I like the better traction with the R1s but they churn up the dirt/frozen mud around my barn. I was wondering if R4s were something in between. This sounds like the case although R4s are closer to R1s than turf tires.

This is exactly what R4s are. A compromise between turfs and R1s. They don't tear up the ground as bad as R1s but still give a little better traction than turfs. As far as R4s sliding on snowy or icy side hills goes I went on the sideways joyride of my life on a track loader one time. The grouses on the tracks become ski runners on a side hill. Severely wrinkled my Puckerometer. It's best for me to stay off snowy or icy side hills no matter what I am driving.

I did the same thing in my logging days. The Husky Brute knuckle boom loader I was operating went down the backwards like a shot on those steel tracks. I threw the boom into the ground just as it was going over the hillside.
Got it stopped, cleaned my shorts, then we hooked the D9 to it.(what I wanted to do in the first place, but the boss said it wasn't necessary).

I have never experienced this. I have R4's on my tractor, which is very light to begin with, I do not have chains. My tractor was purchased first and foremost to be a snow beast. Last year was the heaviest winter in 30 years in NE, and it has zero problems. This is scooping heaping buckets of snow and pushing a 64 inch snow blower. Put it in 4x4 and away we go. It can drag a 72 inch box blade full with wet sticky clay without issue as well. I also used it to pull logs and dead fall out of the woods in soft soil without issue. R4's work pretty well and give sufficient traction for all conditions I have encountered. I have never gone swampin though.

I have had 180 degree experience from you. R4's fill with slimy clay mud in 1 or 2 rotations and do not self clean until out of the hole (pulled out). That rarely happens with R1's. Glad you are happy with your performance.

What tractor are you running? When you say "light" how light? 2000, 4000, 8000#?

3038e with FEL, I think it comes in just under 4000 lbs.

Are those R4s looks like the bars line up side to side like an R1, or maybe they are Drag Slicks :p

I do some mudding and off-road in my truck and one thing I have learned is regardless of how aggressive your tread, or good your driving there is a hole somewhere big enough to get you stuck. I love seeing the guys with their street queens show up and they got 40 inch super swampers and they go jam it in the biggest mud hole they can find.

I think there is no question about it.....THOSE my friend are R4's.

Certainly not everyone uses their tractor in this manner but, to me, when asked....4x4 or 2wd.??....The answer is 4x4 everytime.

So you ask....R4's or R1's.??.....My answer everytime...R1's.

You know they are R4's because the tractor is stuck in mud that is not even as deep as the rubber on the tires. To get a 4wd tractor with R1's stuck, the mud needs to be up close to the axle. I have never been able to get a 4wd tractor with R1's stuck and I have been thru some serious mud in the last 5 years of owning one. I have gotten in deep enough to need a push or pull from the loader a few times however. That picture really is an excellent illustration of what folks are in for if they use R4's in the mud.

I have seen many similar pictures with R1s. If the ground conditions are right, ALL tires will load up and you will have slicks, that is just the way it is. This has been said here and before many times.

In this picture, why are the rear tires loaded up and the fronts are not? Forgot to put it in 4WD? To many unknowns IMO. ;)

The brush cutter is high centered. Has nothing to do with the type of tire.

R3 TURF
R1 AG
R4 Industrial-Multi-purpose

I seem to remember reading an article with that photo about the pros/cons of each tire tread. I think the R4's were the overall winner.

R4's are fine in snow until you get ice or wet snow that glazes when compacted. Its frustrating to watch a 2wd car drive up something that your 4wd tractor with diff locked can only get part way up before sliding backwards and sideways back down.

Chains solve this but then you can't really drive on pavement.

I would think the 1's would actually be worse in this since less contact area.
I understand how they are better if they can bite.

I don't think a 3038e weighs even close to 4000lbs. with a loader.

Somewhere between 2500 and 3000 I think is closer estimate.

R1's are never worse than R4's.

Agree and this is why I posted the picture.

Really.??

Post 'em up...them those pictures of Ag's loaded up in mud about as deep as the tread.

Same thing often happens in snow. R4's load up.
