I've had my 2000 a little over a year now and never had any problems. it has always smoked some but not to bad. anyway I lent it to a friend and he called to say it wouldn't start. it had been working great he turned it off and went inside for an hour, came back out and it turns over but won't fire up. he was able to pull start it with his truck. I've got it back home now and it just won't start. it turns over plenty fast enough and had fuel every where. I did try a little starting fluid and it ran fine although it does smoke more than before. I turned it off and waited about 30 sec. and it started back up fine. but after an hour of sitting it won't start again.
if anyones got ideas I'd sure appreciate hearing them.
thanks

Put a new Fuel Filter in it and bleed the lines. And it may have some bad Fuel in it too.

fuel
air
compression

That's all there is. If fuel is clean and not blocked, and it ran when pull started (which does not increase air flow) that leaves compression. Might be time for rings.

that was my guess. Ive never built a diesel so I'm a little worried about tearing into this. how do you do a compresion test on these. since there is no spark plug, do you pull an injector? also are there any shop manuals available? I'm the type of person that if i've got good instructions I can do most anything.
any way thanks for the reply

I bet if you pull the head and look at the rings, you'll easily see the problem. PM me your email address and I'll send you pictures of old rings and new rings in the cylinder of my 1700.

Can we assume you bled the fuel lines properly, assured no water in the fuel, and checked the air filter and muffler? Don't know what you mean by "fuel everywhere", but if the above checks out, you need to check the injector spray pattern.

what do you check on the muffler? exhaust does come out when started so it's not plugged. also I'm not sure how to check the spray pattern on the injector.
thanks mark
