Wood stoves

I'm sure your post went over many peoples' heads...for those not familiar, they're all different names for the same tree. And an odd tree it is, has needles but is not an evergreen. I was a bit surprised by the heat chart to see that it has more BTUs per cord than elm.

Spoiler! ;-)

Heck, Hemlock has as much heat as cherry.

Hence my reference to Juniper in a previous post. The name confused me when I moved up here and somebody told me that was the best wood to use for house sills. That's the name that we had for the low evergreen shrubs with blue berries, growing on ledges and in the cow pastures.

Every stove I have looked at has one small hole with a plug that has to be removed to scrape ashes through it. Not a fun job with a fire going.

We inherited a Darby Coalbrookdale (wood/coal combo) from my father-in-law. It's double wall cast iron AND fire-brick lined. Sucker is heavy!

Anyways, it is a two-door front loader, and there is a full width ash pan behind a swing down door below the feeding doors.

Opening that door is like turning the turbo on though... I always let the fire go out before cleaning the ashes.

I bought a Vermont Castings Defiant Encore in the mid 80's. Still have it. Had a Hearthstone soapstone in a house we bought. After using the Hearthstone for 2 years, I removed it and put in the VC. The more different stoves I use or deal with at friends homes, the more I like my VCDE.

Milkman, I had the Jotul Oslo 500 in my first house a great stove a great heater. Jotul makes a great stove. For anyone thinking a stove will heat them out of their house. If it gets to warm crack a window it is much easier to cool the house in the winter than to heat it up. I don't hear many people complain about to much heat when it is zero degrees out.
