Winch from Surplus center.

Anyone have a WOOD POWER winch from SC ?
Careful "Wood", not "Woods".
I Know that SC stuff is generally good for the price and at least OK regardless of price, but I've never heard of these winches before.
They also carry Ramsey, which I have heard of, but for a lot more money.

Then a receiver mount for about $90 and a fairlead for $40 - plus shipping.
I figure with a 2 inch receiver mount I could move it around from truck to tractor...

I'm not yest convinced that the 10,000 lb is worth another $200.
If an 8,000 pull won't get me out then I probably can't GET out.

Not familiar with Wood but it is probably (A)lso (K)nown (A)s-- Generic Chinese Winch

Harbor Freight has the same rating for $200 less than the Wood 10k and you can get an extended warranty....in fact their 10k is on sale for the same price as their 8k- $399.

Haven't used either but I've not been thrilled with my 8K Ramsey either..first one broke almost immediately, sheared the dogs off the drum, it was swapped out by the dealer. 2nd one has held up...so far.

The HF one appears to contain the mounting plate and roller fairlead, should be a MUCH better deal.
Even if no better, they're probably NO WORSE than anyone else.

I did not get one for christmas (that darn santa, but he did drop off a Jackalope that is quite impressive) but I have heard some good things on a Gorilla winch off of ebay...

I've had one of those winches for about 2yrs now. Worked fine for first 14months, then quit. Turned out the brush-holders on mine were made of brass, riveted to steel,fastened to some kind of non-ferous cast alloy. Corrosion resulted. Been fine since I drilled out all the rivets and cleaned the connections and covered with anti-corrosion grease. This winch is on a 2" receiver on the front of my pick-up. I installed it when my 30yr old Ramsey started acting up. I have another similar 8000lb "cheapie" on a 2" receiver that I use for hauling logs behind the JD. Different make, different motor, still made in China. Three 8000lb units but I like my Ramsey the best,(as soon as I fix it, will be re-installed)

The saga continues...
I received a flyer in the mail a couple of days ago, following closely behind Santa;
Cummins is coming to (my) town.

For those who don't know, this is a traveling tool market packed into a couple of tractor/trailer rigs.
The flyer shows a 10K winch for,,, Ta Dahh... Yeah, $399.
Wadda surprise ?
So, January 2nd & 3rd at the local VFW parking lot will be decision time,
or time for further procrastination (-:

I've heard good things about the smittybilt for a cheap chinese winch.

But you'll have a hard time beating Warn for quality, service or parts availability.

Now that we're on the other side of the gift grabbing holidays...
HF still has the 10K one for $400, but have knocked the 8K one down to $310.
According to the downloadable manual there is a mounting plate in box #2, but that isn't mentioned on the HF web page. If that plate is included I'll probably weld a short length of 2 x 2 underneath it and wham bang, gotta receiver mount to go in the front or rear receiver of the truck or (planned) receiver gadget on the tractor's drawbar.
