Will UAW Strike?

All good until the strike pay fund runs out and then the rank and file has NO income at all. Will see how that plays out. Not like the domestic automakers don't have plenty of unsold inventory on hand and at their franchised dealers because there are plenty. Problem is, in this uncertain economy and rising interest rates, no one is buying them anyway, especially at the prices they are asking.

On a side note, I see they (autoworkers on strike) are starting to offer for sale, toys they accumulated that they can no longer pay for. FB Marketplace and Craigs List are getting loaded with them.

Personally speaking, I don't care if the UAW stays on strike. Don't impact me much, if any. I was always under the impression that 'collective bargaining' was about meeting in the middle, not all for the union's demands and not all for the employer's demands.

Fords. GM and Stellantis have put forth offers that allow them to remain in business but Fain seems to be turning a deaf ear to that.

As the strike continues I'm pretty sure that the domestic automakers will begin to divest themselves of factories here and move to either more conducive states (RTW) or move entirely out of the country to Mexico.

All the while, the offshore automakers that have located in RTW states and are not unionized (and their employees have rejected unionization) before, are still turning out vehicles the entire time.

It's getting interesting and my personal opinion is that it's not going to end well for the UAW.

Unfortunately, I was never able to see California as a young man, I never got there until I was in my 60s and by that time the wackos had pretty much ruined as much of the state as they possibly could
I lived in California for many decades. Spent countless days in the forested back country of Northern California. Only went to San Francisco twice.

The forested back country is as beautiful and plentiful as ever. It's the big cities (and some of the small ones) that have been ruined by poor decisions.

Fain is just following up on his campaign promises to get back everything the UAW had bargained away in the past plus get a 40% pay raise. But it isn't working out that way. I think the UAW will learn elections have consequences.

Furthermore, I am hearing if you try to intervene and stop someone from stealing property, that person may very well be arrested.
Here's how crazy it is.

Stores hire uniformed security guards. Then instruct the guards not to intervene even if blatant shoplifting happens. They don't want to be on the wrong end of a news story or lawsuit so they just let it happen.

So why do they spend the money to pay the guard?

Just read (and I find it to be quite believable) that there is a mass exodus of population from Kalifornia to neighboring states like Texas and of all places Florida to escape the overbearing tax structure and inane regulations that the current governor keeps enacting. I for one, would never live there. It might be beautiful but beauty to me is not footing the bill for people who graft off the government. What I do find interesting is that the current governor of Kalifornia has aspirations of running for President. I find that quite interesting.

The UAW strike on the not so big 3 has really become a regional issue at least here it has and there is little to nothing in the local papers about it and that includes the Detroit Free Press. I know that Fords is standing pat, not sure abut GM or Stellantis however and I have no idea about the CAW walkout either.

The overall new car market has changed radically in the past 5 years.

I left CA about 10 years ago for reasons you described. Moved just across the border, so I still enjoy the CA marvelous backcountry, but I don't fund the nonsense decisions with my tax dollars.

It's so corrupt, it's hard to describe. As part of "feel good" politics, some time ago CA implemented a ban on state workers traveling to certain States that express conservative views. That ban was recently dropped in the dead of night with no announcement-- so the Guv can travel to those States to campaign for Prez.

I see no reporting at all on the West Coast.

Now codified by ordinance and you are spot on.

Our local beat career officer shot and killed a man at Walmart swinging a bat and is charged by DA with murder going on several years now.

The person he killed has become sort of a local hero with public spaces now named for him.

I was speaking with the officer when he got the call to rush to Walmart…

A very vocal public said the man swinging the bat was off his meds and it’s not like he had a gun and was shooting people.

In a split second your career is over and nothing will ever be the same for all concerned.

Departments throughout the Bay Area took note and many officers accelerated their retirements…

Part of the lax enforcement is the results with jury trails not convicting…

I’ve been in a jury where it was very difficult as 2 said no one should go to jail for stealing food because people have to do what people have to do…

The third strike law really had an impact but when it was weakened a 180 occurred and property crime means almost nothing and one juror said that’s what insurance is for…

Jury of your peers can be an issue.

No way I could be a law enforcement officer! I have been watching a TV show On Patrol Live and I get pissed just listening to the idiots they have to deal with. I would beat someone to death on my first shift! I don’t get how they can keep their cool.

I agree.

Sometimes I think back to how the nation was so unified after 9-11 and how it is currently. We used to honor our hero’s in police and fire departments.

It’s bizarre.

Exactly! My hat is off to them and thankful there is folks that will still do the job!

But watching that show has opened my eyes to the issues we face. This thread is a good example. People demanding more money by not working for less money makes no sense to me.

This is the crux... too many have the mindset as long as you didn't kill someone to just let it go... it's only stuff... right?

My uncle died in the line of duty as a reserve officer and I had tested to join the Oakland Police department as did 12 of from my high school.

My oral interview did not go well... notes said I lack command presence and there were also a comment in does not consume alcohol.

Later one of my friends in the department said I should have said I don't drink except I might have a beer watching a game with my friends and it would have been a non issue...

He said being too honest can be a red flag as the interview team might think do we want a guy who doesn't enjoy a drink...

Too many times in my teen years I had to pick up a neighbor having had one too many at a bar and my family was close with another where drinking cost them everything... made an impression on me besides saving money not buying alcohol...

It's kind of ironic in that the 12 from high school that joined OPD are all retired and get more in retirement with lifetime medical than I earned for much of that time...

My son is a K9 sgt and head of their drug task force (by choice 🤬) and he told me they were going under cover earlier this week. It's over now with an arrest but I told him to tell me after it's done, not before in the future, my stomach was in knots those two days.

Seems like communities at large should be making a stand against the union demands and work stoppages. Whole communities have been substantially built by the employment opportunities around auto manufacture facilities and should continue for generations. But if greed beyond what companies offer to pay makes the employees shut down their manufacture, the manufacture will seriously consider relocating. Anyway I just find it interesting how communities and States come up with all kinds of incentives just to attract a manufacture, yet other States don't do more to keep their State attractive to manufactures they already have.

I am glad he is safe! I hope he is appreciated by the community he serves!

You miss the point (I don't mean you specifically)... segments of communities want evil manufacturing gone because it's toxic, dangerous, exploitive and just bad.

When lack of employment issue come up they vote for Universal Base Income and expanding Social Services...

Been watching 'Friday's with Frank' on YT lately. Frank displays a lot of tact when dealing with violators he pulls over. His video's are always interesting. He's mostly a speed cop in Arizona and I find it amazing that motorists cannot obey the posted speed limits. Always in a big hurry to get nowhere.

Big thing up here (Michigan) is driving while texting or talking on a cell phone. I fond that interesting in as much as our vehicles have 'hands free' cell phone usage not that I do because when I'm driving. the cell phone is turned off anyway. Nothing that important far as I'm concerned.
