What is this shaft?

Am I the only one who doesn't know what the transverse splined shaft is for? (The one to the left and above the normal PTO shaft in the pic)

Stowage for a 1000 rpm PTO shaft insert. Pull out the 540, stuff in the 1000 !

This. Pretty standard for tractors starting around 100HP.

some are also pull out, take off other covers, flip end for end and put in other hole and put cover/place back over the one you just took out, you dont need a stow away spot ;-)

My JD 3020 had that. I never swapped them out but I was told that if I do it, park the front tires in a low spot, have a bucket of oil handy and don't dilly-dally around pulling one out and putting the other in because you will loose a lot of oil.
