We find that cardboard in the walkways covered with wood chips or leafs work the best. In about 2yrs you dig out the walkways and have nice decomposed soil.
No matter the weed barrier each year weed seeds will get in and start to grow..nothing is fool proof if your not useing chemicals and I wouldn't suggest that.
