weight box

My friend just built me a weight box out of 1/4 diamond plate
steel. The size is 24"x24"x16" . It is now filled with rocks.
My question is how much does this thing weigh ?
Just a guesstamit ? I have no idea, when I pick it up the rear tires squish down. The traction is great now especially with the box and tire chains.

5.2 cubic feet of volume. Crushed stone or cobbles? My guess 500 - 600 pounds.

I would guess about 400lbs if your talking pee stones for a filler.

Why don't you just take it to a scrap yard or landfill and get it weighed? Even if there's a charge it would be minimal. Then you'd know exactly how much it weighed.

Why don't you put the empty box on a bathroom scale, weigh the contents a bucket at a time and add them all up for a total?

Thanks guys. I was thinking it may have weighed more. I dont
think the wife would like the idea of using the scale. I'm to lazy to bring it somewhere to get it weighed, it was easier to ask.

Tom,

My Glover's pocket ref "weight of materials" table lists most types of dirt, gravel, and crushed or broken stone as weighing between 100 to 125 lbs per cu-ft depending on how much sand and/or moisture is mixed in.

So your 5.2 cu-ft holds 520 to 650 lbs of typical gravel / stone.

But don't forget to add the box itself. You don't say which side is 16", so the box (less brackets, pins, weld bead, etc) would be either 576 or 568 cu-inches of steel x 0.286 lb/cu-in equals 162 to 165 lbs.

I estimate your total would be between 682 and 805 lbs plus the welds and the additional brackets and hardware you don't describe in detail.
