Good evening;

I was going through my rod to make sure I had enough for the project that I am working on. I came across about 5 lbs. of red coated unmarked 1/8" rod. The rod itself is almost black, and I thought that it might be iron rod for doing cast iron work.

I inherited the rod when I purchased my welder. All of the other rod was marked, but this rod is either not marked, or impossible to see the markings.

All help appreciated

How thick is the coating? If it's fairly thin and possibly has green dots on it could be Lincoln 5P 6010. Can you post a picture?

Thick flux coat. At least as thick as 1/8" 7018. No dots. Will post picture later today.

It may help you to post a pic over at weldingweb too - I've seen several guys get fast results on "mystery rod" questions.
As I recall, usually with a pic of someone having the exact same rod.

From the pic's it looks like they may have gotten damp at one time. They may not be any good.
You may want to knock the flux coating off a couple of them to see if there is any rust underneath.

I am guessing that is a 7024 rod, due to the color and thickness of the flux. If so, these are high deposition rods for flat or horizontal fillet welds.

Here is a pic for comparison : 3/32 7024 on your left and 3/32 7014 on your right.

The flux looks too thin to be 7024. My guess would be a cellulose coated rod, like 6010/6011.

Let me try again. image-266111699.jpg 3/32. 7024 on your left. 7014 on your right.

The one on the right looks like it could be 7014. The one on the left looks like it could be a low hydrogen rod by the grey color, maybe 7028 but could be 7024. Run a couple beads with them and it will help narrow it down. You can tell quite a bit by what the bead and slag looks like.
