I've never used a shear, but I know a puller is WAY faster than a chainsaw. View attachment 532438
Saw..
I have the same " Ponderosa hair" as you. I thin it with a Stihl fs90 with a carbide saw blade. Works great and cuts them at ground level. I didn't like the skewers the little stumps left with my chainsaw.AH HA As I thought - there is a definite difference in what you are doing with a tree and what I do with a tree. When I thin my pine stands - I simply use the chain saw to cut off the trees approximately 6" above the ground. I do not worry about the root ball - it will rot out over a couple years. You not only cut down the tree - you also pull the stump.
Heck - my stands of young pines are as thick as the hair on top of a 20 year old man. As I walk thru the stands I am cutting 10 to 15 trees per minuet. I don't give a dam about the stump or root ball.
Well I ordered a shear EZ Axe Manual Tree Shears | QuickAttach
I know a few other places were less expensive but I got it for what I thought was a fair price. And a someone locally had one I was able to see and that sold me on it as he was unable to tear it up. Just got my shipping confirmation. So may have it to play with over the holidays. I really liked the PTO driven cutter with the grapple if it was closer I would have went and looked at it but I do want something I can trim trees with also. I will post photos once I get it and use it.
