It should bolt to the valve cover- not the head.

Aaron, if your air cleaner pics are correct, he either has a 16oo or a lot of non-1500 parts on his tractor.

I would be very curious what the serial numbers are on the side of the trans. I cannot find even one YM that does not have a diff lock. There are too many differences, IMHO.

Our air cleaner picture is correct. His picture does look like a 1600/1700/1900 engine. None of those have a 2 piece pinion gear though & all Yanmars have a diff lock.

Edit: Ohhh... I think he was just using a picture that Careyo63 originally posted of his tractor.

Here are some pictures of my engine. No holes on top of the valve cover. Only holes on the side. Had to straighten the bracket for it to work

I also took some pics of where the diff lock would be. No lever, or anything.

I'm a believer, must be a really early model. Valve cover is certainly different, and if there were a diff lock, the shaft should exit the case right above the brake. Is there a plugged hole there?

I reiterate that I would really like to see the serial number stamped on the left side of the transmission case. By the left ankle when you are sitting on the tractor. In a clear spot should be a number which "should" start with "YM"

OK Here is a picture of the serial number on the tranny.

It says 1500D - 00301

Is that cast in, or stamped?

I thought they all started with YM, YM1500D etc.

If that #301 is the production sequence then it seems to be one of the earliest ones. Does anyone know when production began on these?

i believe they ran from 1975 to 1979. that is what some of the papers state that i had gotten with mine.
