Well, I bought a used transmission today for $300 plus shipping. It is being shipped to me from out west. With the price of individual gears....this seemed like the smartest option. I will keep you posted on the progress.

I was missing a few of the ball bearings in the 4x4 shaft. It is easy for them just to fall out. So I thought I would pass on that there is a seller on ebay that sells the 8mm bearing balls really cheap. I bought 25 of them for $6 with free shipping. I couldnt find them anywhere elso for that price.

Hopefully my transmission arrives soon

They may be too big, should have 5/16 balls.

I measured the ones I had with my digital caliper. They were 8mm on the nose. Wouldn't they have to be metric since these tractors are Japanese?

im with you G.. i was thinking that as i read danny's post i was thinking why would a Jap made tractor have 5/16 balls? But nothing amazes me that much anymore my 30 yr old chevy seems to even have metric on it?

The Japanese parts book even lists 5/16 in the description.

5/16" = 7.9375 millimeters

I will see how the 8mm fit when they arrive. The 5/16 marking might just be that they listed the closest english equivalent. I think they are so close in size anyway, that there will not be an issue. They probably came with 8mm from the factory but can but either size can be used.

Quick and rough calculations puts the 8mm .002 of an inch larger than the 5/16--if they do not fit or bind up then you will have to get the smaller ones.

Remember the parts manual is in Japanese there is no need for the "nearest equivalent" as it is for the Japanese market and Japanese repair centers. The dealers are right on this.

I believe Aaron is quoting directly from published conversion charts. That makes the 8mm .00625" smaller than the 5/16", which may or may not make a difference.

Well, the tractor is back together. Everything works great! The transmission I bought was a little different than mine, so I had to swap a few additional gears to get everything to work right. Drove her around for a while today.

Did some wiring too. Put in a new fuse block and wired the back lights to blink simultaneously (like hazard lights)

I ordered a new seat and am in the market for a steering wheel.

Also, the 8mm bearing balls worked fine too. The 4x4 shaft slipped right on.

One more question for you guys

The key switch has a counter clockwise mode (you have to hold it...spring like action) Is this for tractors with glowplugs...Mine does not have glow plugs. Or is it for something else

Also, the lights on the dash are oil pressure and coolant temp right? But which is which

The key going to the left is for your thermostart. You can go to search and type in thermostart and find out all about it. My gauges on a YM2002D are probably different than yours. The middle section of my dash has 4 lights. top left is battery water level, top right is oil pressure, bottom left is coolant level (overflow bottle), bottom right is charge light. Yours might be different.
