Chris, thanks for the info, it always just seemed light to me, but I guess that is the stripped down version.

hi folks,
Well I am thinking about buying a trailer for the 3400..
and I really don't expect to pull it much..
But the coming year may see the construction of another house and I don't think I am going to leave the tractor there....

Looking around I found :
Buy & Sell New & Used Trailers 6 FT 4 IN X 16 UTILITY TRAILER WITH TUBING RAMP GATE at TrailerShopper.com

Buy & Sell New & Used Trailers CarryOn Equipment 7X16 Tandem Axle Black at TrailerShopper.com

pulling truck is a 2010 Tacoma,4x4 LB, automatic with tow package-
Rating is 6500 towing and I have a brake controller...

Should I not consider doing this?

or will a small 15 foot of so trailer be ok?

my L3400 has a loader, with loaded rear tires..
and a "light" boxblade 350 or so...

thoughts???

J

The tandom axel trailer looks nice but i could not find any mention of brakes.
I think your truck would pull it fine but like another post said you NEED trailer brakes.

If I were in your shoes I would strongly consider a 18' trailer at a minimum . I have a Mahindra 2615 similar in size to your 3400. My 18' trailer is short when towing with the rotary cutter. Just food for thought.

My trailer is 20ft. just a little over 2ft. is the dove tail. My CUT. fits great with extra room. If I need to move my 8n or the ym2500 with the bush hog attached I have to remove the back rail/gate and use the length of the dovetail for the implement. If it was me and was only getting a flat deck I would get nothing smaller than 20'. Alot of times the tractor is not the only thing I have loaded or needs to be moved.I also prefer the wood side rails instead of metal. I have found having removeable rails come in handy loading things. Esp. with a fork lift or being able to load from the sides. My scale weight is 1920 LBS. it's well made the dual brakes makes a nice option.

I have an 08 Tacoma manual, 4X4 and a 20' bigtex car hauler. My numbers would be 2600 tractor, 900 loader, 500 loaded tires, 830 BB, 2200 trailer coming to 7030. I would be 530lbs over the Tacos tow rating and 30lbs over the trailer rating.
I have a different truck to tow my L2800 in this configuration when I need to so the only thing I would be doing is over grossing the trailer by 30lbs.

I haven't towed anything over 4000 lbs with the Taco yet so I don't know how it acts with anything heavier and I do have a brake controller.
Just be sure you install a brake controller and watch your weights, also if you still have the three leaf pack you may not like how it will squat, there is a TSB (don't know on 2010 years but 05-09) for harsh ride with weight, basically you go from a three leaf pack to a four to carry the weight.

I have a L3400 HST and a 16 foot tandem axle trailer (7K rated). My 2003 Chevrolet 1500 (5.3L with auto) pulls the tractor just fine on flat ground. The tractor and box blade fit completely on the trailer and my FEL sits at the very front of the trailer flat and firm. The truck has plenty of stopping power.

If I bring the mower it will stick off the back of the trailer a few feet, no big deal.

Remember, with trailer brakes, it's one more thing to keep up. I think you are fine without them, unless you are towing heavily.

Good luck.

You are clueless of the law. In Texas you are required to have brakes on any trailer over 4,500#. Get your rig legal or if you get in a accident you will be at fault.

Wow! I am glad you were not on the road near me when I was in Texas a few months ago(I hope...).

Let's see you stop when that deer runs in front of you. Or that kid on the bicycle. Or the kid chasing a ball. A blowout on your truck. Or, in my case, the little white Honda cuts you off and hits the brakes...

I trailered my tractor on a borrowed trailer once. Was running 55mph when this little Honda cuts me off bad, and tags the brakes so it could catch an exit. Well, the brakes didn't work that time on that borrowed trailer.

It pushed my 3/4 ton a lot. Fortunately, I was on a straightaway; if on a curve I think it would have jack knifed me. As it was, my anti-locks were working overtime for a few moments.

5500lbs+ is a lot to tow with no brakes, no matter what size pickup. I'm looking at those L3400's to buy; now way I would tow it without brakes on the trailer.

I'm guessing as long as you don't need to worry about brakes, you don't inspect/grease the trailer bearings either?
