The full-scale plant under evaluation by EnviroMission here in Australia needs to be 5 km across and 1 km high to achieve 200 MW of electricity generating capacity

That would be twice as tall as the world's tallest buiding. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif What are the odds that this will actually happen?

Here is the prototype in Spain

That will be a monster when it's done for sure. Interesting article mostly the part about The prototype was built in Manzanares in Spain to test the concept, and is now decommissioned. 7 years is not a very long lifecycle for any type of powerplant. Now, I'll have to do some digging to see why they "pulled the plug".

Most likely just because of its size. Too small to justify the operating costs once the concept has been proven.

Someone will probably come along and complain about the:
noise
warming of the local climate
it looks ugly
it costs too much
etc
etc.

But those complainers won't offer a better alternative.
Man, I am a cynic!

Yes !!! But probably with good reason.

Hate to say it, but the nuke plants we have around here are prettier. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif And they work just fine on a cloudy day, too.

So Vin, after reading the story you attached- is construction underway? They called for a 2003 start date, and a late-2005 completion.

I'm a sceptic to, but i have a feeling this might go.

Native title claims could be an issue. The the proposed site was moved probably due to this issue. It is now 20 kilometres from Mildura. Mildura has a population of 25,000 there is no other towns within cooee. The area is dessert, average rainfall about 4-6inches.There is a mood i understand that the town will bend over backwards for this project because the tourism will be more profitable than the power generated.
