Egon, it's my wife's canadian green thumb. I've still got a bushel or 2 still green on the vine.

Only so much you can do with so many tomatoes. Giving them to others is usually the best route methinks.

Re: They just keep comin\' ....

That sure looks like a bumper crop. What brand seeds are you using? My tomato plants did OK this year, but are late in ripening. We are just getting the red ones now.
Pickle the green ones. When I was young, this is what we did with all the green tomatoes in the fall. My mother would also make tomato jam out of some of the ripe ones, but the recipe went to the grave with her. She did it from memory, like so much of her cooking. What little recipes we have, there are no directions and the ingredient list has no quantities. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Re: They just keep comin\' ....

Junkster, we got 3 varieties in the garden tomatoes: Big Boy, Roma, and Cherry. I counted over 200 fruits (not including the cherry tomatoes) from 10 plants we started from seed in early May. Bumper it was. The plants are still yielding too. Not seen anything like it before.

This was all from a raised bed garden build on top of a horse manure pile with 2 yards of top soil added.

In the pic, to the left rear, you can see the tomato plants - over 8 ft high! Also in there are:

Front Left = Sweet bell peppers
Front Right = Jalepeno and Habanero peppers
Center Front, Swiss Char and a Basil forest
Left Center is Eggplant
Center and Right Rear are cherry and roma tomatoes also.

This year all those plants went bonkers.

Amazingly, this garden, due to mid and late summer rains was only watered manually 3 times with a soaker hose.

Re: They just keep comin\' ....

My tomatoes did almost nothing this year. About all that's still producing is the okra. I have to reach above my head to pick it now. Of course, we got tired of okra way before it really started putting out. I've given away at least two bushels. Kinda makes me sad to see they get $2 a pound for it at the farmer's market.

Re: They just keep comin\' ....

Must be the horse manure that is giving it such a push. I have a barrel of dog dung..... think that will work next year growing tomato's. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif I would have horses, but the wife won't allow them in the house and there is no room in the garage. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif A barn being built, is out of the question because she claims that I already have enough space if I only clean it out. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif Wait till she finds out that I have just purchased another antique car. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif Said that she is going to leave if I brought home another car. I also bought her a beautiful set of new luggage. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

There's a few good recipes for ketchup over on
forestryforum.com Takes a lot of tomatoes, seem to remember 12pounds for one batch. Juice is good too.

LOL @ junkman: also bought a new set of luggage! hahaha

as for DAP's mater prob, well we got BEAN probs, must have 40+ good qts jars full all canned up. the peas didn't can well and or the lids were bad as we had 20+ that didn't seal /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Kind of made me mad enough were I was ready to give up on the beans too, lots of work in them peas what with the planting shucking and canning only to have em not seal up. worst was they held the seals for a few days then let go after storing em!... what a nasty frothy mess... our maters seem to be having lots of problems slow starts then they seemed to get burnt off really bad by the "sevin dust" I put down to stop the dang tater buggs & cabage flys. the dust seemed to FRY the vines really bad even though I barely coated them... the fruits them selves seemed to drop of just aobut the time they stared ornging up, and pretty sour too... the cherry ones fell off while nearly fuly green!>? but everyone locally had bad mater crop... consider you're self lucky... We had GREAT cucumbers though, must have had 200 lbs off of 4 plantings of 4 vines per.! NICE ones too. some were 2~3 lbs each!... want to let a few go to seed for next year they just keep a growing! have 2 really NICE pumpkins that were volintieers from last year! about 30 lbs each nice round and ORANGE as can be! still have 4~5 green on the vines from them... no luck what so ever on the EGG PLANTS and our RED taters grew great but the buggs grew faster, and the fruits didn't do all that well... about 20 lbs max for a 20' row /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif the White taters are about ready to DIG but seem NICE so far. I have 20" of them too. (Last year we got 40~50 lbs of each out of a single 20' row!!!) My CORN grew bad too, just as it was FINALLY earing up the wind storm blew down all the white & bi-color, but left the ornimental, which I planted a bit TOO close to my eating corn.. (the WHITE that DID produce actually was very cool looking with RED/BLUE Marbeled kernals intermixed with the white ones, very nice taste!

odd growing year for sure ..
