Starting procedure for 3005/790

Hello

My new 3005 JD has me confused on starting procedure. It`s working fine, just that I do not understand the manual starting procedure on one point.

I understand pre heat etc, just that manual says "hold key in until engine runs smoothly, to keep glow plugs activated on initial startup"

I am holding key in but there does not seem to be a way to push it in? I push in there is no spring motion or anything?? Just trying to make sure I am not doing something wrong?

This is just in manual. On tractor itself it does not say, "hold in key"

Does the key actually push in and out, because I can`t feel anything happening when I push key in....

Maybe its just bad translation from Japanese language?? ANYBODY

I'm at work now, but from memory the glow plug activation is by turning the key to the icon next to the key. The key does not push in. One direction (clockwise) starts the tractor and the other is the glow plug (counterclockwise). It is like cars that have an accessory switch on the key start. Go look at all the little icons.

First off, the 3005/790 does not have glow plugs... just an air heater. My experience is that you don't need to bother with this unless it is down near freezing. What you do is turn the key counter-clockwise for about 20 seconds. This heats the air in the intake manifold. Then so the engine will get a big gulp of this warm air, you advance the throttle a lot. Then turn the key to the starting position and as soon as it catches bring the throttle back to about 1400 rpm.

Try starting the engine normally first though. If it starts don't bother with the cold start procedure.

On my 790, at 8600 ft. I use a block heater except for the warmest summer months. With it I never need the intake heater. If I don't have the block heater plugged in I have to use the intake heat most of the time, below about 70 deg or so, I assume because of the altitude and it smokes a good bit until it warms up.

Muxster is correct. The 790 merely has a pre heater, which essentially serves the same function as glow plugs. The icon on the dash shows a little heater coil as the picture. It is printed at approx the 5 o'clock position. The bottom edge of the key needs to be turned towards the icon (counterclockwise)

In the old 790 owners manual, it was on page 16-Operating section. Your manual should be the same page or within a page or two.

My 790 has always started without the pre heater down to about 20 degrees. It will "rattle" louder and differently for up to a minute until it warms up. The sound will then quiet down and sound normal. The sounds from the first minute are scary until you get used to them.

If I could just show you the exact paragraph in manual of my new 3005...here it is, I actually got this off John Deere web site, I am pasting the exact language...

Position C - Run - Rotate the key to this position and the engine oil pressure light and battery charging lights should illuminate. You will also hear a clicking noise when the engine fuel shut-off solenoid engages. Hold key in until engine runs smoothly to keep glow plugs activated on initial startup

See that last line hold key in etc, and that is the exact line in my manual and on jd web site.

I am sure you guys are right, but you can see what my concern was.

Unless they have put a new engine in the 3005 that is a major error. This is what my 790 manual says.

1. Place gear shift lever and range shift levers in the N (neutral) position.

2. Depress clutch pedal all the way down.

3. Push hand throttle lever completely forward.

4. Activate the intake air heater system by rotating the ignition key switch to the preheat position (B), and hold it there for 20 seconds.

5. Rotate key switch clockwise to the start position (C) and start engine.

6. When engine starts, immediately reduce engine speed to 1200 - 1500 rpm.

7. If engine runs rough, repeat this procedure until engine runs smoothly.

Fred: that's how my starting procedure works. If I turn my key to "on", I can push it in to glow. It will also push in when it is in "run" (and running). However, it's very obvious as it's spring loaded. Maybe they just misprinted your manual? (I have no 3000 series knowledge )

I'll concur with what the others have said on the 790. Only when it's around freezing or below will I turn the key "left" for 10 seconds or so before starting normally. All other times, I just let 'er rip and all is well.

It's either a misprint or there is an entirely different arrangement on the 3005. Does your key actually push in and is it labeled as such on the dash? Glow plugs ought to be pretty obvious on the engine, if you knew what to look for.

Might be worth a call to the dealer, though they may have to call tech support for clarification.

Yes just like that, and infact the directions on the tractor itself do not have the extra line"hold in key for glow plugs etc" but only in manual.

I just wanted to make sure I did not do any harm by missing a step.

Position A - Preheat/Cold Start - Rotate the key to this position to allow the engine to preheat. The engine should not run.

Position B - Off - With the key in this position, all switched power is off, and the engine should not run.

Position C - Run - Rotate the key to this position and the engine oil pressure light and battery charging lights should illuminate. Looking in my manual under engine specs, under starting aid....says GLOW PLUGS...

I have not heard back from dealer, they are probably still laughing...the guy thinks he has glow plugs

Well hey, maybe it does have glow plugs. Maybe your ignition switch does have a "push" position. Do you have a service manual or parts book to reference? I know for sure that my 790 does not have glow plugs, but I can't say for sure what the manual says. I'll check tonight.

Y'know, it's interesting too that in your description of switch position A, it mentions engine pre-heat. I seem to remember my manual being pretty specific about intake air pre-heat. Hmmm...

Indeed the 3005 may have glow plugs. The 3005 on-line parts catalog also shows glow plugs.

Fred, maybe you could look at pictorial display in the on-line parts catalog for the 790 and under the alphabetic index for heater to get an idea of how it looks, and then the 3005 glow plug pictorial. Then look at your 3005 engine and see if it has a rectangular box with an electrical connection above the intake manifold (air heater) or an electrical connection on the head near where the intake manifold is (glow plugs).

Here are some pictures of what the air heater looks like on the 790. The air heater is just below the rubber air intake hose. It has an electrical connection on it and also the coolant overflow tank is bolted to it.

Thank you for your note. I am glad that you now have room to park all your
vehicles. About the tractor. Your tractor should have glow plugs. it is a
manifold heater. In the new 3005 tractors (not the 790's) you turn the key
to the on position and leave it for 5 to ten seconds. The tractor should
start. On the old tractors you had to push the key "in" which means towards
the steering volume. If yours can be pushed in, then you have an ignition
from the older series, which Deere would do in the transition to the new
series. Both will work effective.
Where the confusion may be with your chat room, is the old style of glow
plug was actually in the engine and it warmed the block up. Not so with the
manifold heater, they warm the air before it is fired.

You might want to talk to a mechanic at your dealer. Glow plugs and a manifold heater are two different things. My 790 has an intake manifold heater. On my 790 you turn the key counter clockwise to activate the heater. If attached a picture that elalexander took of a 3005, thread "3005 replacing the 790" and it looks like it has an intake manifold heater just like my 790.
