Shipping container for tractor storage

Protecting your tractor is indeed smart.

I use two containers.
One on the left side & one on the right.
Built a roof over the open span. Very simple & it works.

Boy I wish I had that much flat ground because that is exactly what I would do! Two 20ft'ers and I would be dancing. :cool2: Might even rent out one to the better half for her storage as long as I got the middle! :D

I see these advertised on CL all the time.. Some in the 3K range. My question is why so many and so cheap?
Are they not usable again ? ... 1 trip across the Atlantic and it's done ?
One trippers are designed to be built overseas, loaded with freight, then sold into the storage/rental business upon arrival in the western hemisphere. You'll note the door handles are set a comfortable waist height versus very low handles on cans used repeatedly for shipping. Those cans are loaded/unloaded while on special trailers so handles are placed where you can reach them from the ground.

Also consider the process. The containers are usually built and filled overseas, then sent to the US and emptied. The US doesn't manufacture a lot of stuff to ship overseas in shipping containers. We ship to China:
1. Soybeans: $15 billion
2. Civilian aircraft: $8.4 billion
3. Cotton: $3.4 billion
4. Copper materials: $3 billion
5. Passenger vehicles (small engines): $3 billion
6. Aluminum materials: $2.4 billion
7. Passenger vehicles (large engines): $2.2 billion
8. Electronic integrated circuits: $1.7 billion
9. Corn: $1.3 billion
10. Coal: $1.2 billion

I think very little of that is put in 40' shipping containers. So it is more cost effective to sell them here versus chipping them back.

I have kept both of my tractors in a shipping container for the last 4 years. Keeps the mice out. The company I bought mine from delivered it. All I had to do was set some railroad ties prior to delivery. A lot of them leak so if youæ±*e able to see it before you buy you should be able to tell if leaks when you go inside.

I currently have a Massey 1742. There’s about a foot on each side and a couple feet of top clearance with the ROPS up. Of course, these containers are only so big so I know not all tractors will fit.

Nice fit. Just barely, but it fit!

Nice fit. Just barely, but it fit!

It’s tight at the door on the roof.. 1/2 inch to spare.... The sides are good.. I normally park with the right side inches from the wall and that gives me enough space to get around to the back...
But like others have commented, You can’t store in a better location. The plastic will stay like new since there is no sun deterioration... And you don’t have to worry about rats eating into the computers or wires on this new stuff.. I have two exact boxes set 20’ apart.. Plan is too roof in between to store implements..
Living in a port city has its advantages.. 40’ high cubes range from $1800-2300.... Freight is where they get you........

I haven’t had any diesel problems with the heat. Yet survived its first summer with temps touching 100 at times.. I did add soffit vents up high on each door to get some air moving in the box.. I have seen add whirly bird attic style fans on the roofs...

What did you use for vents? How are the vents vs bugs? Have lots of mud daubers where I am that nest everywhere they can. So I want a vent that will not only keep them out, but the vent body itself not an attractive homestead for them.

Added metal roof between my shipping containers...
Now I can keep my implements out of the rain...

I used attic vents that had built in screens.. They are 5”x12” +/-... Screwed then in with self tapping screws..

Roof looks good. I want to do something similar. What did you use for the beams?

I picked up a single use container last spring. Because it was so new, all of the lettering and number decals could be peeled off by hand. It cleaned up very nicely and required no paint. The floor didn't even have scuff marks on it. I was fortunate to find a seller that had one with doors at both ends. He delivered it and placed it on the timbers I had set and leveled. All in all, it worked out very well. I suspect it will most likely outlast me.

Very nice! Is that a full size? What did you pay if you don't mind?

me.

That is what they refer to as a 1 tripper... Made one trip across the water then sold... Very nice.. One trippers are very expensive here in Houston... Mine are not in that condition.. But still solid and water tight... They also should last a long time.. Are you going to store your tractor?
