Clearing an area about 6' wide and 40' long, mostly underbrush, Honeysuckle, miscellaneous scrub, but peppered with Sumac and Shagbark Hickory. Should have cleared it years ago when I could have done it with the brush mower like I did the rest of the area.
I cut the trees to about 2-3', then pull the debris away leaving the stumps as shown below:
Then I turn around and go at the with the Hoe. Most of the Sumac come out with a single pull or two. Some take a bit more. The Hickories have been ornery though. Even though they're only 3" or less, they have a lot of roots that don't want to let go. Only takes about 15 minutes or so each with the ground being so wet and soft. Would probably be a lot more work when hard and dry.
But, for those who say you can't dig stumps with a SCUT Hoe:
Yes, they're small, but so is my digger. Not like I'm trying to take out 36" Red Oaks. Somewhere on here are some pictures of 12" or larger Locusts I took out.
This is also one of a very few days so far I wish I had a grapple. But I can't justify the price considering I don't have the hydraulics. I was interested in the electric one until I saw the price and the discussion of power load.
One side word of caution. When you're digging stumps (or anything) so close together in soft ground, be extra careful or wheel placement around those fresh holes. Not quite pucker-ish this morning, but attention getting a few times for sure.
