rust prevention

Thought I had seen this discussed here before....did a search but did not find it.
What have you found to be the best and cheapest stuff to put on ground engaging equipment like a disk harrow to prevent rust?
I've used diesel fuel but it seems to last only a few months at best. Thanks

I mix up a bit of motor oil and diesel fuel (3 to 1 oil to fuel) and spray the disc (use a 2-gal garden sprayer w/nozzle wide open)

Plow gets a wipe down with grease. I use a car wax applicator pad to apply the grease. In between uses, If I know the plow will be in the dirt again soon, I'll just spray it down with WD40.

Used oil works good, have any used hyd or ATF around, that would work good also.

G'day if you are going to use used oil then see if you can get used trans/hyd oil as it is alot cleaner than eng oil, I have a customer that was using used eng oil as chain lube and it made the chains last but made a heck of a mess of the machine

I use the rust check you can buy at the local Tractor Supply store. It works but the sun seems to dry it off of the implement after a while. The best way is the keep the implement out of the elements. With the plow I shine it up till all the surface rust stains are gone then apply the rust preventer.

Mix in some automatic transmision fluid and it will protect longer.

Best is never cheap. I like to use concrete form release oil on any metal (plow, disk, spreader) that has to set out. Lasts much longer than used oil, doesn't wash off in the rain and is non-staining. Plus I do pour concrete on occasion, so it's always nice to have around.

I get 55 gallon drums of motor oil from a friend who's a Pennzoil distributor. My barrel pump gets all but the last gallon or so from the bottom of the barrel. What remains is poured into a container and saved for uses such as this. My used oil is collected by a recycling business.
