Hi Everybody,

When we first started the OT forum a couple years ago, the idea behind it was to be a place for related topics to be discussed. Cars, trucks, working around the house, even cameras, computers and things that were coming up in the course of regular posting. When people asked me then, if it would be ok to post a joke list or two, I didn't see the harm in it.

But as time has gone on, more and more posts in this forum have drifted far off topic, and without any real benefit to the community other than to serve as a place for people to talk. Religion, politics, and joke lists have become way too popular, and our OT posts have grown to as much as 25% of total posts recently.

That means that 25% of the steadily increasing costs of operating this website, go to support general chi-chat between members. It doesn't go to building the base of tractor information, for example.

I fear that if we let the OT forum continue to grow, and in time possibly dominate the site, that we will dilute our content, and float away from what made this site so great; the best tractor questions and answers online.

So, we have decided to restructure the OT forum here, to a Related Topics forum. This doesn't mean that every single post must be related to tractors. Talk about your cars, your trucks, your house or your pets. Talk about computers and cameras, or whatever hobbies you might have.

But, we will no longer be allowing the following topics to be discussed here:

1) Politics
2) Religion
3) Joke lists/E-Mail forwards

Additionally, the quantity and quality of Related Topics posts by each user will be monitored by the moderators. We don't like to see users posting 80% of their messages in threads not having anything to do with tractors.

This is a free website. If you are a contributor, we just ask that you contribute something at least somewhat related to tractors. The bottom line is that too many posts here aren't contributing to the purpose of the site, and just increasing workloads for moderators, and taking up a fair bit of operating costs.

As always, thank you for your participation and support.

Hurray for Muhammad! That has got to be the best news I've heard for the forum in a long time!! I don't think there's anything this forum needed more.

Might I suggest you delete the threads that you deem inappropiate for this site. I believe it will be the most effective way to get the word out.

I'll be going back to tractoring now. /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif

Great idea! Even though lots of the non-tractor topics are interesting, it was the focus on tractors that got us all here in the first place. Keep up the good work. Will

Maybe this is just the opinion of folks with TC33d, R4s, FEL, and MMM--but I second BigDave's idea. As to the overall approach, Muhammed, thanks.

I have found this a good place to talk about those subjects in a civil manner. The way some of the threads turn into very interesting, non-tractor subjects is what keeps me coming back. I'm really disappointed to hear this will now become just a tractor site, just like so many others on the web.

And to have the quality of my posts evaluated is not acceptable to me since about 80% of everything I post is not worth much other than idle chatter with those on this board whom I like and respect. This is what I like to read, maybe I'm in the minority. However my guess is that number of posts and membership will decrease considerably. Too bad.

Didn't the TractorByNet.com name give you a hint?

Hi Guys,

Originally when I first heard about the demise of the Off Topics Forum, I was a little disappointed. I think it was first really an issue when it was brought up when it was deleted from CBN. I was hoping that Muhammad would not completely delete the OT forum from TBN. As I see here, he's done a great job of giving us an alternative. As I stated in my post on CBN, the decision to do anything with this site is his alone. We are non-paying guests here. I think the Related Topics forum was a stroke of genius. It allows the forum members to still talk about things related to the site, and will do away with any possibility of a flame war. I apologize for my post on CBN, and say BRAVO.

Well, I understand your reasons. However, I really enjoyed the Off Topic subjects and also enjoyed a good conversation with people of differing opinions. I am still amazed at the civility of even the most controversial threads, ie… religion, politics, etc… I imagine that it would have been a tremendous load to monitor and maintain to keep a family friendly rating. So, while I will greatly miss the Off Topic subjects, I’m sure there will still be plenty of other things to keep my interests. Thanks for providing TBN. I appreciate it.

Same here,MossRoad, tractors are what attracted me here like all of you but the off-topic stuff was my favorite. I respect Muhammad and his reasonning behind this decision very much,it does make sense but i will still miss it. It is like if you took my FEL away, I would still use my tractor but surely not as much. PTOnline

I think it will help greatly as now there won't be so much posting that is the same on cbn and here. Most of the topics that Muhammad is making off limits here, except religion and politics, have a place over on the cbn site.

Yep I think that is a good call boss !

Still giving us the place to chat but not about silly things.

Way to go TBN !!

Thank you Muhammad - this has got to be the second best thing you did for us, the first of course being the development of the site. There have been numerous times that I composed a posting to expess concern about some of the dicussion in some of the threads but didn't send them as I perceive myself as a guest of your service and decided to bite my tongue. Now I don't have to. So thank you once again.

Hi njrqs,

I guess that's putting it pretty plain, and simple. I wish that I had said it that way. Great post.
