You will save yourself from replacing or redistributing the gravel in the spring if you reverse the blade when moving the snow. I have found that it makes a huge difference. Have fun playing in the snow!

A piece of railway track (80-120 lbs/ft.) makes a good addition to your counterweight.

great idea! now to find a piece

Check your nearest RR crossing. If the train is going fast enough they won't even feel that 6 foot gap. :D

When I was thinking about various counterweight ideas I looked into buying railroad track from a couple of local scrap yards (I'm about 50mi from you) with no luck. They all said the same thing....they can't buy it without paperwork showing proof of ownership, and that doesn't happen often (guessing the RR companies contract in bulk when they scrap track). A while later I was at the closest yard selling scrap from one of my house demos, and told the young guy running the yard what I was looking for....he took me right to a section of various shapes, and sizes of steel that would work just as well as RR track. I picked a large 1,300lb slab for my dedicated counterweight, but when the weather gets better I'm going back for a couple of smaller pieces to make a front weight for my Massey. I think most yards would be able to help you find something that would work just perfectly, although some won't sell to the public....which is weird.

If you have a "Steel factory" around your area,
they make steel "billets" from scrap, you could ask them to cut you a few pieces that were rejected.
A 4x4 inch by one foot long weighs 50lbs.

Local scrap yard would be a starting point. Talk to the guys that work for the RR if there is one near you. They can usually point you in the direction of their scrap. I got my three pieces from the scrapper.

I have a front mounted blower and rear 48" box blade which complement each other nicely. One thing to add is that a box blade if setup properly is quite good at removing ice and freezing rain build up on a paved driveway.
