Our new house has a rainsoft water softener (well) and it's a new toy for me.

It looks like it's a low salt brine warning...can someone tell me where to get the salt?

Also, how do these things work? I see where the salt chunk level has dropped in a refillable cylinder and it looks like there is a dehumidifier in the cylinder. The whole thing is greek to me.

TIA

You can get softener salt at pretty much any store... look for the yellow Morton bags. An empty softener will hold about 4-5 bags, depending on its size.
The quick way to describe how it works:
The thing you see in the cylinder you describe as a dehumidifier is actually what does the softening. It is full of resin beads, and when you run your water, it travels through that cylinder. Minerals that make water "hard" will stick to these beads, and out comes soft water. Eventually, the beads hold all they can, and the softener will regenerate, using the brine made from the salt to rinse the beads, washing all the mineral deposits down the drain.
Hope that makes sense.
