PTO Generator Question

   / PTO Generator Question #41
The best thing is to first know what your home power usage. When my hot tub is running, heating and one jet pump going it consumes 9kw, then the clothes drier when its heating consumes 6kw, one burner on my electric stoves uses 3kw so those are the most power hungry devices I have. I have a 16kw generator (not a PTO) but I would never consider loading it more than 70% capacity for very long(11.2kw). With just the hot tub filtering I can run the whole house no problem on a 16kw generator.

I have a Solar System so I can accurately tell you what consumes what by the SolerEdge meter.

That being said-if I ever invested in a PTO generator it would have to be a minimum of 16kw. My tractor pits out 19.7 hp on the PTO so now I just need to find a 16kw or more that will run efficiently on a 19.7hp PTO. Is there such a thing as a 16kw generator that can run from a 22.5 hp tractor with 19.7hp PTO....I dont think so :(

I have been at many Mennonite shops with all kinds of Lasers, Plasmas, Robots, you name it. Diesel Generators don`t seem to pose a problem, although yes I am talking large ones and not PTO sets.

You might have trouble running your Haydron super collider!

Actually, forget about the frequency as far as stuff not working, but think of it more as a remote TACH.

These are the two machines I used twenty years ago. Both pictures taken for selling the equipment. 15KW High Speed rotor Onan. I have an electrically heated house, and I once tried to kill the generator by turning on every load could, and couldn`t. Sorry, I don`t know the numbers. But it is interesting that given that, using a 540-1000 JD gearbox, I could not spin that same genny with no load at all. Must be all about the governor settings.

I have never figured out why, when the power goes out for some one, and they are on generator power, they have to run everything in their house?

I mean, can't you go without a hot tub or other "non essential" power robber, until the power comes back on??

My thinking exactly. Good time to find something that has to be welded too! I mean, it's nice to have capacity to live like normal, but in a prolonged outage a small thrifty slow running Diesel would be a much better bet.

I kind of take for granted that I always have all my basic needs and every light works. But it never ceases to please me, that the microwave is available and working to heat my morning coffee.

During power failure we go minimal.... Keep refrigerator going and well going with small generator (6500 watt) heat from fire place, A lamp or two for reading... Screw the idiot box (TV) sort of nice to have some quiet time and maybe really have conversation with other family members or maybe read a bit...

I can run my Winpower genny off of my JD F935 mower even though it turns the 'wrong' way from a driveshaft rotation standpoint. The only trouble is transferring our dinners to the freezer and the ice cream and ice cubes to the oven.

As the OP of this thread, I am skimming through various posts. Many are not exactly what I am looking for but still pertain. But I appreciate everyone's comments.

zzvyb6:. Yes, I did see your humor in that one. Hilarious post.

I prefer a HFT or NT 10kw gas box for emergency use. Not messing with the 3pt, PTO in the rain or sleet. Turn the key, run a cord to the fridge, microwave, and TV or radio, small heater, live in one room till power is back on. KISS

I would say that every area and location has a different idea of what may be needed,
in my area depending on the season you may want your furnace or boiler to be up and running, get a power outage in sub zero tempertures sure don't want pipes freezing.
If you rely on a pump for water to drink, wash and flush that's another priority system.
Then depending how many freezers and such, it will all add up and in many cases those small units and extension cords don't cut it.

Under those conditions I would go full standby system with auto start and auto cut over and maybe 250 gallons of propane for fuel.....
