Replacement PTO Shaft for Stump Grinder

I have a baumalight 1p24 stump grinder and while using the grinder the PTO Shaft separated and rounded out the outer tube since it was cut too short. The PTO Shaft looks to be a series 5, but finding a series 5 replacement shaft at a reasonable price seems to be hard to do (most are coming out to be between $350-$500). I am using this stump grinder on a John Deere 855 which has 19 HP on the rear pto at 540 rpm. In this situation would a series 4 PTO shaft be an acceptable alternative to use or does it have to be the series 5. Any help/guidance would be helpful.

As long as you are using it on that tractor, it will be fine. If you leave it on the grinder and put it on a larger tractor, you will probably have a problem.
You can actually get away with a seies 3 for that tractor as it is rated for 30 hp

I wonder if the PTO shaft for the MechMaxx SG24 stump grinder would work. They sell the PTO shaft separately for $160 with free shipping. Web site says "delivery in 10-15 days".

The description of the shaft itself does not give much info, but their stump grinder specs describe the included shaft as "1-3/8” 6 Spline Tractor and Implement Ends PTO Driveline Shaft with Slip Clutch"

I ran into the same issue when looking for a replacement shaft for my woodland mills grinder. Ended up biting the bullet and buying direct through them, was just under $300 if I recall correctly.

Just looked it up and it's $335 shipped these days: Series 5 PTO Shaft with Slip Clutch (Trimmable)

Like you I'd expect there's a cheaper solution out there.

Do you need the complete shaft? If the ends are intact you can buy just the shaft material (inner and outer), assemble into the ends, and cut to length. It's a lot less expensive than a complete drive shaft. I did that when my mower shaft came loose from the tractor and got a few dents in it.

That exactly what I do when I need one, like you said, its a lot less expensive and it's fairly easy to do.

If you want the entire shaft look on ASC's website. The sell Euro-Cardan PTO shafts complete in any series for big bucks but they also sell import Chinese shafts for a lot less. Last time I euckered one, I bought the Chinese one from them.

All listed it their online catalog and they ship quick as well.

I have never replaced the tubing before, any good videos or instructions on how to do that? Would I need any kind of special tools?

All depends on how yours comes apart, some are welded and some aren't.
