We have a rural church building that has a propane furnace. The building is used once per week (you guessed it, on Sundays). Since there is nothing to freeze in the building we keep the furnace turned off during the week and somes one comes out turn it back on sometime on Saturday to be ready for Sunday morning.

My question... is there a "programmable" thermostat that will allow us to turn off the system after service and automatically turn it back on at a predetermined time the following Saturday? That would save us an extra trip to the building to manually turn it on. The thermostats I have investigated at Lowe's only allow for a low temp setting of 45 degrees which is low but still "wastes" money heating an empty building.:(

BTW this is a "heat only" system.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.....

Check on a site called (Grainger.com). They have several t-stats ranging from $40-160 that can be programmed day by day or by the week. A few I came up with are part numbers 4nb73, 3mu99, 4ne58, 1ne61. You have to have a commercial acct to purchase but they might sell to a church. If they won't then pick the type you want and call a local furnace supplier and tell them what you are looking for.

I haven't seen a programmable thermostat that will turn off the heat entirely, but they may exist. The lowest I've seen one go is 35 degrees. An option that may work for you would be to put a 7 day timer on the power circuit for the heater that will only turn on the power to it when it is needed. You should be able to find one for less than $50 as long as the current draw of the system isn't too high.

why would you want to turn the heat off. don;t you want to keep water pipes, etc, from freezing ?

Contact honeywell & ask if they have a t.stat that will suite you

Honeywell TH8000 series t-stat, will go down to 40 degrees, four daily settings if needed, seven day programable. Also has a lockout on it so no one can mess with the temperature settings.

Almost all congregation have a memeber that has a business. Have that member purchase the thermostat from Grainger, then sell it or donate it to the church. Completely honest and a nice thing to do. ;)
