WAXING THE BELLY AND BLADES - seek help man

:) :) :) Now Rob, ;)
Lets think about this, by waxing the undercarriage, there is much less chance of acquiring particles of cow paddy, just for starters ! Then there is the issue of grass and weed buildup etc.... the list goes on and on ..... ;) Get a grip man !

Sorry Scotty, I haven't taken my meds today...or maybe a maple syrup hangoer...again. :) Without them I get real gsddeiuber;isoie;kjfd when I hear someone waxing the underside of a mower.

Oops, mine is due for a waxing I guess. Oh the shame!! :D

Rob J; the only "good news" in your photo, is the bush hog is already turned up for easy cleaning access. My recommendation:
1) Remove the blades for sharpenning
2) Pressure wash the underside of deck
3) Prime & paint the underside
4) Apply 2 coats of car wax to underside
5) Spray with non-stick coating
6) Set it back up-right, so gearbox oil won't leak out

There, a couple hrs work, and this "hog" will reward you with great service for many years.

You guys tease me; I'm only very slightly playing with you, the principles remain true. We all need to take care of our tools, put a little extra time into their care & maintenance.....

Man, leave the poor fellow alone. It is a new shreader. I can tell you theres not a thing wrong with a little wax. ;) Maybe waxing the underside is a tad extreme, and maybe the paint work and rubbing to a show-shine is over kill, but who hasn't used a little Mequires Quick Detailer on the tractor and impliments to spiffy things up? My wife has even helped put a quick coat of carnuba on the Kubota...and the four-wheelers...and the new tool box.......

See, it's normal.

Yep, taking care of your tools is very important. For example: Bush Hog maintenance 101--

A) Is there oil in the gearbox and did you grease the PTO shaft? If Yes then you are done, go to part B -storage options.

B) Is it in a safe spot, on the ground where you won't trip over it. If Yes, you are done, go to C) beer selection options.

C) Post Mowing Beer Selection. Did you work hard today? If yes or kinda maybe then select brew of choice and fill your gearbox. If no, return to step A and begin polishing bush hog until you meet criteria for brew selection.

Afternoon Bill,
You took all the kidding very well, youve passed the test ! ;) Its all in good fun and certainly not malicious ! I think we all have some excessive compulsive tendencies when it comes to tractors ! :)

Ok Bill, I'm gonna come out on ya just a bit. :D First of all we (I) am just playing around. It's a bit much for me, but that's cool.

Second my BH is 8 years old now, new in 1999, new to me in 2005. I did do some wire brushing, welding a couple spots, drilling some holes in the deck (love the way the frame creates these nice holding ponds on the deck), and yes I slopped on a heavy coat of black paint. Nah I didn't buff it. I paint all my stuff black because it sits outside, black collects heat and heat will evaporate the water faster. Supposed to help with rusting. But I haven't painted it since...I got help! :D

When not playing, er.. working with my tractors, I am a practicing psychiatrist (32 years). Although I see lots of people with OCD(Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), I don't see many folks like bill6 as the main reason people see me is that they are in distress about their condition and bill6 is not, although he indicates his wife maybe. My dad was very similiar, ocd traits, but pointed out that what he did was a example of "pride of ownership" and there was certainly nothing to be distressed about that in his opinion, and I'd guess bill6 would agree as do many of us who do preventive maintance, worry about what oil to use (dino vs synthetic), and wax their JD garden tractors regularly. My uncle, a farmer of 600 acres in the 60's and 70's would routinely oil his shovels (with the waste oil he collected) after using them, and before hanging them back up and would derisively call a rusted tool a "farmer tool" as his neighbors did not share his attitude. I enjoy this site and not because I'm a psychiatrist as I do not treat hopeless cases! (Tongue firmly in cheek) Bill

Great points Dr. Bill. I would add however that if perfectionist Bill is driving his family nuts that is evidence of dysfunction. At the very least I hope Bill takes time off from his polishing duties to buy his dear wife a very nice present every so often to make up for his dysbehavior. :)

I hope he's kidding but maybe he's not. In my over 40 years of running BushHogs I have never painted one, or anything else. About all I do is check the fluid and once in a while change blades when they break. They are supposed to look used. I certainly don't want to be confused for a cityfolk.

Bill, how do you get 28 MPG with a Cessna 150 that uses about 5.5 gallons per hour and flys at around 110 MPH ?
I have been wondering about that. My Mooney only get's around 18 MPG

Good for you Bill. You can borrow my B7100 any day. Oh heck you'll have to keep it a month before you would be seen in public with it. But that's ok, I would wait till you are done. Post some pics of this imaculate bush hog. I'm certain many of us can't tell what colour some of our implements are, much less notice any scratches.

Thank you Bill,

I have a 8' Woods that cost $3500 ten years ago which I've always taken extra good care of it because it had better last another twenty years with about 50 hrs use per year. I have a 5' beater so the big deck never gets abused in rough stuff. It has always gotten a good hand wash at least every fall, brushing out all the nooks. I had just washed it and got it tucked into the corner of the shop two weeks ago and had noticed the rust around the blade inspection plates and the faded flat black clutch and torsion drive shielding. Well, thanks to Bill, I just got in from the shop from cleaning and touching up the rust, re-painting the shields, and then waxing the deck. Took about two hours and I must say if I repainted the tailwheels it would look like brand new.

My wife never missed me?!? and I'll be bustin' with pride when I drag it out in the sunshine next spring.

I have never fully bought into the "obsession is a bad thing". I think it's just nature's way of ensuring that man does not rest until does the great things he was created to do. The value of waxing a bush hog should not be disparged. It's just as important as counting ceiling tiles. :D

Hi MrJim; It's not hard to get 28 mpg. First, I converted the Cessna to a taildragger, quite a bit cleaner without the nose gear. Next, I have flap and aeileron gap seals. Wheel pants. Small tires. And finally, a prop that's been re-pitched to super-cruise. It's like having a 6th gear in a 5 speed car. Also, I keep the plane highly waxed & polished to minimize parasite & induced drag. I'm jealous though, of your Mooney. I have raced Mooney's in efficiency contests and greatly improved their MPG. For example, do a google search about the CAFE 400 in Santa Rosa, CA. I was involved in this for many years back in the 1980's, and was close friends with Mooney president, Roy LoPresti and his wife, Peg. I was at his house in Kerrville, TX prior to him moving to FL.

For HickoryNut, hey, very nice job! For sure you have enhanced the usable life of your hog, and it will look much nicer also! Now, how does your tractor look?
