What would you consider optimum height for a welding table in inches.... Right now plan seems to be at 38 inches, but what is your opinion... This is a small table 26X28 inches (because that was what the $10 piece of 1/4 inch plate is) and it's going to be in small shop, and on casters...

Depending on your height 38" should be good. You don't want to go any higher for a small top as it will look out of proportion.

Mine are all 36" but I am only 5'6".

I would look at what I'm welding normally and how I put the job at a more comfortable level. I'm all over the map as I have a specific table to position mower decks or it gets tossed on the portable table which is set up for plasma cutting as it works well to hold material in position. So if you are welding enough bulky items, lower would be better for basic fab on smaller items.

Make the height so that the majority of the work is done with your forearms horizontal.

I do most welding in situ vs on the table. Farm items are typically too big for it. Unfortunately I'm also usually welding OOP.

I built a good size table (with double fan hood and curtains, etc) for work years ago, 38" is what I used. We all agreed it was more comfortable both standing and using the stools.

Scissor lift table is the best height.

Make a fist. Knuckles should reach it or by an inch without bending over
Just be able to pick up a soapstone without bending.
If you are 6 ft tall about 34 inches.

If you get a backache washing your dishes or folding your laundry you know what's too low. ;)

1.For fine work – working height: 39″ (100 cm)

For fine work, such as drawing, you should have your elbows supported. This relieves the core muscles. Recommended workbench working height is approx. 2″ – 4″ (5 cm – 10 cm) above elbow height.

2.Easy work – working height: 36 ” (90cm)

For light manual activities, such as assembling or processing workpieces, a working height of around 4″ – 6″ (10 cm – 15 cm) below the elbow is recommended.

3.Heavy work – working height: 31″ (80cm)

For labor-intensive work such as heavy assembly work, sawing wood or planing, low working heights are more favorable. A working height of around 6″ – 15″ (15 cm – 40 cm) below the elbow is recommended.
