Hello all,
Looking for some advice.....We recently bought a house that had a new well put in. The old well pipe is still in the front yard and sticks up about 3.5ft above grade. I want to remove or cut this pipe below grade level. Any tips on how to go about this? Is there anything I should know or anything I am missing/overlooking? This will be a spring time project seeing that we live in Upstate NY, but I am just trying to educate myself beforehand.
Thank you,

Wouldn't it be a nice place to put a wishing well decoration?

I would think that if you are going to cut it, maybe you could look into filling it first.. at least close to the top after it's cut? That way nothing can sink down into the well.

Maybe, 18" below ground?

anybody else have thoughts?

Check the local regulations first. They may have specific details for well abandonment.

When we had a new well put in a few years ago. We were required to cap the old well. Cut the well off about 2' below grade. Then stuffed paper down casing about 2 feet. Poured ready mix concrete until pipe was full. When concrete hardened, filled the hole in. Reason given for capping well was if any contaminants were to get spilled on ground it would not get in water table.

Whatever the local regs are CAP that well before you abandon it. Too many kids have fallen into abanded wells and other holes. We cut one off down as far as we coult reach, cemented it and than added an old truck wheel over that.

Hey Rubs...where in Washington Co are you located? I've been spending way to much time in Washington Co the past couple months looking at tractors. Actually not...I'm still in the heavy looking stages and have not made a final decision what it's going to be.

You might want to get one of the wooden wishing wells and have your wife put some type of cascading ivy or flowers inside.

I'm located in Warren Co...just to the West of you. Perhaps we'll cross paths at one of the tractor places in Washington Co one of these days.

6or7,

I am at the Southern end of the County, however you are right we may cross paths at some point at one of the local Farm/Tractor suppliers. I have another question for you (or anyone willing to answer for that matter). Do you have any idea as to what the Farmers pay per acre to lease land for crops? I can't seem to find a thread related to this.
Thanks

RichZ,

We're somewhat new to the area so you probably don't know me but we live in Easton. Beautiful country, great neighbors, some room to play, no regrets...

I'm getting $60 per acre per year, a bit low for this area (Central Maryland). I'd say the average for this area is running around $75 per acre per year. (My tenant gets a break for planting my sweet corn for me.)
