New pole barn

Hello All,

I am about to build a new pole barn. 40x60 with roll up doors on each end. I would like to provide access from one end with a 14 foot tall door. I also would like to keep the wall height to 12 foot for appearance reasons. I don't like the look of a 14 foot wall pole building. Does anyone know a way to build with 12-13 foot walls and have a door opening of 14 foot. I have seen scissors trusses but no details to see exactly how this would work. Thanks to anyone that can help.

You can make the door height taller then the walls by just raising the header up to the rafters. Make sure you know how much room you need for that rollup door so it will fit. On mine, I think when rolled up, it takes up 2 feet. The taller the door, the bigger it will get when rolled up.

With a 40 foot span, I doubt you will have too many choices on what type of truss you can get. To span that amount of distance, you will have to use what's available, and the only truss I know that will go that far will only give you as much space as the height of the walls. A monitor style barn will allow you to do this easily if you are open to posts inside the barn to change the height of the roof down the middle of it. This will allow you go make the doors as tall as you want it to be.

You could use a clear-span type frame and accomplish what you want in your building.

You could gain 20 inches in height at the center of the building if you had a 1-12 pitch on the ceiling joists.
