We set all the trusses this afternoon and put in temporary bracing. We used a jig to pick up each truss with 4 deck screws and a slot system that help the truss across 4 points to evenly and safely pick up each one.

It was a family affair with my dad and younger sister, my father in law and brother in law and a couple close friends.

Took us 5 hours to set all the trusses. Everything fit perfectly without and problems.

We have a rain day tomorrow which is OK as everyone is tired. We will start on the roof purlins on Friday.

Is that a homemade scaffold. How is that built?

Smart using what you have available and doing what it took to get it done!!!

What does the chain attach to on the tractor?

I like your ingenuity.

The scaffolding is pallet racking I bought used off of Craigslist. I knew I wanted shelving at the back of the shop to store my tractor implements vertically on pallets - bucket, snowblower, tiller, forks and snowplow. I figured I would buy it in time to use as scaffolding. We mounted it on 2x10 skids so we can move it around the inside of the barn to set the trusses with.

The support chain from the crane attaches to the loader mount. That way we can raise and lower the boom pole without changing the length of the chain. We just can't change the angle of the boom without unhooking the chain and changing the length. The chain is not needed to move the boom without a load, the pole is strong enough to support itself, but I think it would buckle or break the mounting bolts that attach it to the forklift plate with any real load without the chain.

Nice job 👍

Another day of barn building. We added 900 feet of 2x4 purlins to the trusses. At first we started by climbing up the outside of the roof, using the purlins as a ladder. But at 24" a part, it is not a comfortable way to work. After doing a portion of the roof this way, we knew there had to be a better way. We decided to add catwalks to the trusses, so we could work on the roof from below. Using our 12' pallet rack / scaffolding we did the bottom 5 purlins from there, and then used a 16' aluminum ladder plank on top of the bottom cord of the trusses to do the next 3 purlins and then added a 2x4 cross beam to the trusses to do the final 2 purlins. It was a pain moving the scaffolding and ladder plank so many times, but it was much safer and easier to work standing up vs climbing a purlin ladder. Have to go back to work next week, but the metal roofing should be going up before the end of the month. Have to trim the end purlins to 12" overhang and add 2x6 facia board all around the bottom edge of the roof.

Yes, very pleased with the progress. We have only been working on the barn for 8 days. But it has been spread out over months, 5 days in June and 3 days in September. I have 5 more vacation days to use in Sept, and 10 to use in October. Hoping the barn is done by then.

I'll say.... this is all very impressive. Great work. Makes me want to attempt this.

With the price of lumber rising, my timing on the barn kit was perfect. I bought the kit in November, before the COVID price increase. I went online and built the same barn kit today, and the price has gone from $13k to $18k. For once something worked in my favor!

I have this coming week off from work and the goal is to put on the fascia boards, metal roof and roof trim. Then we will finish the floor in prep to pour concrete. Maybe get to the vented soffits.

Weather is perfect. Sunny and 70 most days going down to 50 overnight. Perfect construction weather!

Monday we put on the fascia boards, added extra bracing to the walls and pre-drilled all of the metal roof panels. Today we put on the metal roof. Had 4 people on the roof and 3 people on the ground delivering roof panels. Used a rope and c-clamps to pull the panels up the roof into position. We had 3 platforms to work from - 12' shelving at the low end, a kicker platform a mid level and a kicker platform at the peak. Allowed us to work safely and not climbing on the outside of the roof.

Here's the crew. The roof crew worked hard all day. The ground crew had some time to relax! The ground crew had over 200 years experience between the 3 of them! The roof crew was 3 pastor's and me! I think we had the good Lord on our side today!

Very impressive. You and a couple others I've been reading now have me pricing out diy barn kits. Lol. Not having much luck finding decent ones in my area though. Looking good man.
