Say hello to Corey, the tile guy. He's working on the screened porch.

A little different angle of the tile. Before you ask, its supposed to have the color variation (at least that's what my wife tells me).

The stain has been mopped on the wood floors. Unfortunately, my picture of the family room did not turn out. So, all I have for you is a little taste of what it will look like - here's a picture of the butler's pantry. This is a dark walnut shade. The excess will be buffed off tomorrow and the first coat of sealer will be applied. He'll buff that and place a second coat on friday. Once all other work has been completed, he'll return for the final coat. Thsi way, no one will mess up his floors. This guy takes alot of pride in his work.

I think it was rox who asked for an updated view of the front of the house. The tractor man was out yesterday to do the final grade, so he moved the dumpster away from the house. This is the first opportunity I've had to get an unobstructed photo.

I'll try to get better pictures of the wood floors after Friday.

Again, thanks for following along.

WOW, it sure it WHITE!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Sorry, couldn't help myself.

I was really wanting to compliment you on your floors. They look amazing. I love wood floors. Some of the old mansions I've toured have a diferent patern in every room. Different woods and sizes.

What's next? Pretty soon you'll be living there and you'll have to start a tractor thread!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Eddie,

Our original plan was to forego shutters. However, now we are thinking about adding them to break it up a little. However, the windows in the center section of the house are too close together to put shutters there. So that would mean just doing the windows on the right and left wings. I have my doubts about how that would look. My wife pases by a home on one of her regular driving routes that she says has shutters just like we would end up with and that it looks fine. I need to do a little photoshop work on this picture to see if I like it.

Another thing we could have done differently to prevent such a monochromatic look is to have used a colored tin on the porch roof. I was suggesting this at the time we were selecting tin and my wife wasn't sure about it so we played it safe and went with silver. She now wishes we would have picked a color. Do you know if this metal roofing material can be painted (where it still looks good and will last)?

We are very pleased with the floor so far. We wanted an aged look - hence the dark stain. We could have had it distressed (where they beat it with chains, hammers, etc.) but decided that with 2 kids, it would get distressed enough with use. The final verdict is still out as the finish has not yet been applied. But, so far - looking good.

Whats next? Inviting all my TBN friends to Georgia to help us move. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Actually, I've got to get back to the trails after we move. I'll see what I can get done with the TC29D and then decide from there what other equipment I need to bring in. Then there is the basement to finish. This will probably be a slow process with me doing as much myself as possible. We have landscaping to do - I'll only have a minimal amount done before we close. So, I think I'll be busy.

Good to hear from you.

Cool. I've never been to the White House before. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Everything looks good bmac! I think you'd find that the shutters would add a lot to the look and no one would notice. People tend to just look at the overall "picture" and don't notice those details.

Thanks for the reply, Steve (except for the "White House" crack /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif)

I've done a very crude photo enhancement adding shutters. What do you think about this?

Mornin Bmac,
The shutters on the sides make a big difference! That was just what I was thinking before I looked at your computer enhancement /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Scotty,

Thanks. As my wife pointed out, getting some landscaping in will help soften things up a bit too.

Appreciate the feedback.

OK, folks. Which style of shutter would best complement our style of house? Traditional louvered?

I like the raised panel with louvered as a second choice. Most notably, I like the functional hardware (hinges and holdbacks), they add a lot to the package.

BTW, I've been watching all of your progress and your house is just beautiful /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Good Morning Bmac,

I hate Monday morning quarterbacking, and even worse, people that just through out random comments without anything useful or constructive. Unfortunately, this is what I'm about to do. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

When I saw your picture of the exterior of you home, I thought is was just primed and not painted yet. The overall look of the house is very stark. You got some great features and detail, but the color and texture all blend together to create a solid mass. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

The shutters will soften it a little and give you some warmth, but it's a very minor change that doesn't solve what I see as a problem.

Landscaping will also soften it up quite a bit, but again, I think it's just gonna soften the edges some. Plants can make a great home fantastic, but they are only icing on the cake. The cake needs to be finished before you start adding decorations to it.

What I think, and again, I hate saying this because it's not my home or my dream, so it's not my place, but I'm hopeful that maybe you see the same thing and are also looking for some ideas. The house is a giant WHITE focal point out in a country setting. With the trees and nature all around it, the home jumps out at you, but doesn't show off it's features.

You need to take advantage or your archetecture!! It's too late for brick or stone, but you can add some color and totally change your overall look entirely. I'm not a designer, nor do I have the ability to tell you what will work. Sometimes you have to bring in outside help or just start experimenting.

Just to continue sticking my foot in my mouth, I'm gonna suggest you paint the colums a warm dark color to bring your eye into the porch. The side wings might look less impossing if they were a lighter color than the main body of the house and the dormers might be another color to accent them. Or just the oposite. I really don't know. Again, sorry.

Shutters and what style of shutter isn't something I'd even be thinking about right now.

I do apologize for being so blunt. You have an amazing home. The interior of you home is at the very top of a high end home. The materials and finish are first class. But the exterior just doesn't have the same WOW factor, or curb apeal. To me, you home looks unfinished. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I think Eddies right, but all you need to do is paint the trim around the windows, and maybe the columns, then it will be fine.
Looks great, you must be thrilled to be so close!

/ New Home Construction #579
bmac,

It's your day in the barrel! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I understand where Eddie's coming from. From experience I know that right now all you see is the house......uh.....because that's all there is. The shutters will definitely be an improvement and landscaping will also help a lot. Just adding other elements to draw your eye to will help.

As for the shutters, I would go with either the louvered or the raised panel. The slat type to me are more "old world" or Tuscan as my wife would say. You've shown black shutters in your photos and I've seen several country / colonial style houses with that combination and it really looks sharp. You might want to also consider a color, maybe a burgandy or a deep blue? Our last house was a two story colonial that originally had burgandy shutters that we later changed to black when we added vinyl siding a few years prior to selling it. I thought I had a picture here at work but they must be on the home computer. I'll try to send one this weekend just FYI.

Keep up the good work and don't let that mean spirited Eddie Walker get you down! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Just kidding Eddie. No....really. Honest.....I'm kidding! I know bmac appreciates the honesty.

I msut confess, when I saw the picture of the front of the house I thought the exact same thing that everyone else did. I think your photshop doctoring gave just enought to see that shutters on the right and left wing windows would break it up.

I don't have a preference of shutter type.

I'll go against the grain and not suggest painting the columns. What I would paint in an accent color to match the soon to be installed shutters is that facia board right on top of the columns. Also suggest accent paint color ont he boards on the tops and bottoms of columns but leave the columns white. My suggestion would be to put up shutters, paint them classic green, the most classic combination in the world is white house green shutters. If not green then a color of your choice.

Just paint the facia board above the columns the same color as the shutters and stand back and take a look. If not enough then paint the boards at the tops and bottoms of the columns. I wouldn't paint much more than that to start. I think it might be enough.

I recomend you do go lightly with your accent color, as if you do to mutch it begins to look "cutsie". Painting all aroudn each window etc. in an accent color. Go slow, perhaps the facia board, the top boards above the columsn and the bottom boards of the columns and the shutters. Yu might even be able to doctor it up in photoshop, the colors, just using rectangles. If it is not enough, then suggest move up to the dormers. Take it easy a little at a time and evaluate each portion before you okay the next.

Now that I think of it, I would try and paint the items mentioned above the exact same color at the brick. That would provide the cohesivness I think would be esthetically pleasing. Might have to go just a tone deeper than the brick.

I am glad I wasn't the first one to respond. At least with so many repsponses you can start to gauge the valididty of the honest feedback.

Again, BIG TIME, your hosue is GREAT. Beautiful in fact. These small suggestions in no way deter form the over all magnificent home you have built.

I mentioned it befroe and I'll say it one more time and let it go. The white trim mixed in by the front door and side windows of the front door, don't see "to me" to be harmonious. Only my opinion.

BMAC, it really is a pretty home, even mroe so now that I found out your wife has a small office in the back. Lucky Her!
