I have an old 18' low boy trailer that I have used for many tasks. A few have been moving heavy loads. It has no brakes and I have always felt a bit uncomfortable. In the last few months I have made 2 heavy loaded trips from Fl to Texas. On one I had a trailer tire blow out. I had to buy 3 new tires. The last tire blew an hour from home. On my last trip I was hauling a Honda CRV and other stuff from Florida to Texas. I gave myself lots of room and drove very slow in traffic and speeded up on the open road. Still not good.

So I ordered 4 electric brakes that I will put on the trailer. They were delivered yesterday, I opened and checked them out. All look good. Now I can't wait to install and try them out. They will give me a little peace of mind.

Why would tires blow due to no brakes?

Sorry, not a good statement. Just stating what happened on that trip. If trailer became unstable because of a blow out, the brakes sure would have helped.

Next thing - brake lights and a break-away brake controller please. For the safety of others.

Just did something similar to my 14' home made utility trailer - added brakes to the second axle and had the original breaks on the other axle hooked up (bought it that way). Added the breakaway switch and battery backup. Same as you, I just wanted the piece of mind when hauling a full load. Now, I just need to figure out how to get it registered for 7K gross load (I registered it in Maine for 7K, but the registration came back with no weight stated???). Already towed my BX25 with it once and noticed the difference stopping. Of course, to get the optimum breaking force, you'll need an integrated brake controller too.
