Saw a pic of a backhoe operator picking up a manhole cover neatly, just made me wonder, what is the most delicate operation you've done with a tractor, most likely the FEL or a backhoe?

I've ocassionaly tried to pick up little things I've dropped such as the newspaper coming back from the mailbox, etc. with little success, but I'm working on it.

I can pick up a dime off of the concrete floor with a forklift... if that counts.

My in law straightened a bent nail with his backhoe. Picture this, nail hammered half way into the top of a post, it was bent over 90deg. he caught the tip of the nail with one of the bucket teeth and pushed it up until the nail was straight up again... I was impressed.

Wasn't me, but when we had the excavator tear our house down and haul it away after the fire I saw water start spraying. I thought he hit the line the way the water was squirting. Suddenly it quit. I asked them what happened. He said that something caught the valve and turned it on. I asked him why did it stop? He said he took the bucket and turned the valve back off. This was a plastic line sticking out of the ground with one of the plastic valves on it. I was impressed.

Me, I'm just happy if I can get a full bucket of material and either didn't spin the tires or bog the engine.

My aunt ran a fork lift for American Can Company for 30 yrs, I wish I'd asked her!

I'm still working on the newspaper on the ground using the FEL.

I can't pick up a dime but as a NOOB proudly picked up the kids' soccer ball with the FEL while mowing, not missing a beat and later neatly deposited it in the smelly trash can before coming in for dinner :)

I can do the dime thing with a forklift... Could carry pallets 4 high when I worked for a Glad contractor. That's about 14-16ft of height.
Regular forks or push-pull... Never could master the clamp truck though.
Go as fast as you like.... Just don't stop or turn fast.

Drove some 16ft lumber out a 12ft door... without damaging anything.

So I don't get the big head, I tore up a lot of stuff with a forklift too. :)

I picked up a dime once but couldn't figure what to do with the chunk of concrete.

With the amount of people who own a digital camera that can take a quick mpeg movie, there is no reason that we all can't see the fork lift driver pick up a dime.

Please make a movie and post if for us to view. If you don't know how to post it, make the video and let me know. You can email the video to me and I'll post it for viewing.

Ahhh, but there IS a reason...

If EVERYONE knew how to do it... it would cease to be a "special" skill... and thus the flow of free beer and dollars given up by those who choose not to believe and are willing to back up their lack of faith with their bets would come to an end.

I will not take a video of the skill in action, and I strongly urge others out there with the gift to keep this secret skill to themselves as well, except when the situation dictates otherwise, as has been the tradition to date.;)

I have never done a dime with a forklift but I can do a quarter with an excavator. Easier with good teeth but can be done with worn as well. I could probably float the excavator with all the beer I have won on this trick, who cares about the money? Your secret is safe with me, threatening to take away the beer sounds like a trick my wife would pull.

I agree, betting money or beverages is the price of admission...

There's a video posted yesterday on Gizmodo titled "Undressing a Woman Using a Large Digging Machine". I was impressed with the amount of grapple sway the operator (and the *model*) have to deal with.
