It took 5 years of study and fast pace summer courses to earn a PHD. It's really demanding and you don't have a life for 5 long years.

I use an old Speeco PHD on my Kioti and it's been a breeze to use. We have hard clay with rocks and I've never buried it. Just set the 3pt lowering speed to fairly slow, dig about 12" and pop it up move the dirt out, then back in for another bite.

I've never found the need for down pressure. With a good spiral tip and cutting edges the auger should take care of it.

When in clay, y'all are using the fish tail style point?

I believe those are less likely to cause the bit to suck itself down.

Be aware that some post hole diggers are not designed for a lot of lifting force on the boom pole (I just looked at the specs for one that was only rated for 500# lifting force). When you are lifting the auger back out of the hole, the 500# of down force goes away. 500# of weight hung on the attachment does not.

That's a good point. Thank you.
