It really amazes me how far up prices have gone. I was talking to a buddy last night that put up one of these in '96. He had a 80x160x12 building put up for roping. It was a Cleary and they did all the work. It was very well built and had the side lights and all. The big doors at each end, etc. He paid $37k for that turnkey. He said today it would cost him almost $60k for the same thing.

NJ John and Robert in NY:

I picked Morton because I had already checked out the work of other contractors in the area. There were some good ones, no doubt, but in the end I went with Morton because they gave me the best "preview" of what I wanted. I must say that the end result was EXACTLY what I was looking for. I watched the construction and was impressed with the quality of materials and workmanship...and techniques. I am an engineer by training and by "personality" so I can get pretty fussy about things if I think they are not up to snuff. I believe I had a very good crew as well. I also wanted to emphasize that, regarding final cost, I did go with some extras that were premium: Highest pitch roof I could get...just for appearance, 2 inch foam core insulated 10 x 10 overhead doors with windows and electric operators. Two of the former. 4 double pane windows, fiberglass shingled roof, acoustical steel interior, and the full insulation pack.

If anyone is interested in seeing the construction details, I took digital photos of each days work. The first one is of a whitetail deer defending her territory on the building site.

Does anyone know why if you reformat a floppy disc on the computer and then try and use it in the digital camera your pictures won't come out right?

Must be a sony! /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif
I have seen the sony cameras do this on quick formatted floppies. Do a full or full unconditional format and you should have no problems.

Boy you hit the nail on the head. It sure is a Sony. I'll try that tomorrow and see if I can get some pics with that one.

Bill -

Would love to see your pictures. I am looking at a quote from
Morton to put up a 30x45x12 at "winter rates" for spring
construction spec'ed as follows:

- Contruction on my slab (slab priced as option)
- 4/12 roof pitch with CDX and architectural shingles
- OSB siding Tyvek wrapped
- 1' overhangs, vent-a-ridge, gutters, downspouts
- 1 insulated steel entry door
- 3 4'x3' windows
- 2 10x10 insulated steel overhead doors

Price: $24,250.

Options:

- 4" slab with perimeter beams, reinforced w/ rebar & wire,
saw-cut relief joints & sealed - $6865.

- Energy performer package R30 ceilings, R19 walls, vapor
barrier, attic access hatch, 2x4 16" oc firring, ready to
sheetrock - $6990.

What this gets me is a shell which I will side outside with
Hardi-plank and sheetrock inside myself. I need the 12'
ceiling to clear a lift in the future. I can save a couple K
by having someone else do the slab.

Couple things I don't like: walls right at grade...I'm a big
fan of concrete or block perimeter walls to keep the wall
sills up off the dirt and snow. Reduced ceiling clearances
with truss design. If I went with something like Miracle Truss
I'd have the clear span clearance for a lift without the 12'
side walls. By comparison a Miracle Truss kit is in the 7K
range but then insulation and interior finishing is much more
complicated.

sounds like a good candidate for 2x6 stud wall construction, no?

John,
Here's the pics of the building I was telling you about.

Wow, Nice Job! Did you insulate the walls before you finished them? Did you buy a "kit" ? I'm going to look into a few local companies for some prices. I may look into cutting some features; floor, insulation, interior finishing, just to get a building up.

   / Morton Building worth the $? #56
John,
The side walls I insulated first. Then I put in insulation in the top as well as the vapor barrier insulation as I was going to be heating this one all the time.

What I do when I buy these is at Menards they have a computer program that you can design whatever building you want. Then it prints out whatever materials you need from there. So it isn't really a kit. All the specialty work you have to figure on your own, like heating, plumbing, electrical, and concrete.

The Mennonite built mine, do you have any in your area, or perhaps Amish? I sent for three bids, including Morton and a local contractor. The local contractor didn't bother to get back to me, Morton was double the price and the Mennonite came within budget. No bird protection or wainscoating around the bottom, but every bit as good a job otherwise. Send me a message if you would like more information.
