Maintenance - 2520

I am about to change all the fluids on my 2520. The manual shows the transmission strainer which has a filter with magnets inside and held in with a spring. My question is when I remove the 4 cap screws and remove the cap will the spring come flying out. When I replace the filter and put the cap back on is it difficult to compress the spring and put the cap back on at the same time.

Second question the JD manual says to replace the hydraulic fluid after the first 50 hours and 200 hours thereafter. My tractor is 5 years old and has only 265 hours so I have been changing the engine oil/filter and fuel filter yearly and use synthetic oil. For the transmission I have been changing it every 2 years using JD Hy-Gard low viscosity. Does this sound ok.

Any help would be appreciated.

I believe the 2320 and 2520 have the same setup for the tranny/hyd strainer/sump - so I'll give you my 2 cents. The spring was not under a tremendous amount of tension that it "came flying out" so I don't think you should be too worried. I loosened all 4 screws to the point that I could use one hand to hold the cover and then remove the screws with the other hand. Then use both hands to remove the cover slowly/capture the spring. On the reinstall, just do the opposite. It's not that difficult - just messy.

Based on the 5 year old tractor with only 265 hours on it - sounds like you're definitely safe with your maintenance schedule. Did you buy the tractor new?

After reading a bunch of threads on JD fluid changes I cleaned the hyd strainer at 50 hours to remove metal filings. I bought my 2320 about 3 years ago and I'm pushing 400 hours on it

Are you saying that you have not changed the hydraulic filter or cleaned the strainer at all yet?

Friend cleaned the strainer at 50 hrs and I wasn't around. It was an relatively easy job except that unlike what is shown in the manual there wasn't a spring. Both ends fit into a hole. One thing I have found is that the JD manual says the engine takes 2.8 lt of oil which I put in and I barely get a reading on the dip stick. If I remember from last year I
had to add a bit more then suddenly I got a reading past the line. They mention the transmission filter but do not show it in the manual. I know where it is but found the manual to be poorly written.

I just changed mine and there wasn't a spring there.... I did have a lot of fine metal on the magnets and some shavings and chunks on the outside.... My original factory tranny filter had magnets on the inside also but didn't have any metal on them. I didn't put the magnets back in the new filter...

I don't recall there being a spring in mine. It's pretty easy to get out and clean. I used brake-clean to spray off the fine metallic silt that accumulates on the screen. There is an o-ring that seals the screen cover to the housing, so don't damage it when handling the cover.

Did you have any shavings or small chunks outside the screen?

I changed my fluids over the weekend. I had closer to 60 hrs than 50 tho.My trans. screen had alot of metal filings on the outside and the magnets had a coating of metal particles as well. One thing....the manual (online an written copy) states that the engine holds 3 qts.,its actually 4 qts. verified by numerous other sources,including here.

So a 3 year old 2320 and a 5 year old 2520 have this setup.

Evidently at some point they changed this to no spring and a cover with only 2 cap screws.
