Purchased a used '21 Plain Jane Rear Wheel Drive X730 and ready to perform the next scheduled maintenance, I have 210 hours on it. I ran into some terminology that has me a bit confused since I'm not familiar with all the X730 variants. I'm planning to perform a Hydraulic Fluid change, I have the Filter and 2 Gal and 1 Qt of Hy-Guard Low Vis. The manual (page 59), Under Section: "Changing Transaxle Oil and Filter (Except Full-Time Four Wheel Drive (HFWD) System" it further states:

9. Remove dipstick. Add John Deere Low Viscosity Hy-Gard™ (J20D) transmission oil through dipstick fill opening:

ItemMeasurementSpecification
All Four-Wheel Steer Transaxle OilCapacity5.7 L (6.0 qt)
All Two-Wheel Steer Transaxle OilCapacity7.7 L (8.1 qt)

I guess I don't know what is meant when they state Two-Wheel Steer above, for sure mine is not a HFWD, any clarification would help. BTW, the X730 Maintenance Reminder states 7 qts.

Some of the X series are available with 4 wheel steer. So if the rear wheels don't turn the opposite direction as the front wheels when you turn then you have 2 wheel steer.

RandyT, I used the same logic however the JD X730 Maintenance Reminder calls out 7 qts. I like the dog, definitely looks like he's driving

Just the front wheels steer, making it two wheel steer.

And fill to when the dip stick shows the "full" level on the stick. May have some residual oil in the transaxle that is part of the manual amount quoted.
Have at least 7 qt available to finish the job.

beenthere, Thanks for the clarification. I guess from a manual standpoint there should be a caveat about residual oil for those (like me) not mechanically inclined. When something cites "Specification" I tend to go with it but understand the 7 qts. Thanks

But he has 4 wheels. And how do you get anywhere if the front wheels turn in 1 direction and the rears turn the other way ? Doesn't that tear up the lawn ? Asking for a friend....

The manual shows fill amount for doing a complete drain and refill vs just changing the filter.

4 wheel steer have longer axle housing to incorporate the space for rear wheels to pivot so could take slightly more oil.
