My 8 foot wide chain harrow has arrived. When I was researching chain harrows I saw that you could buy 3ph lifting frames for them, but they were quite expensive. Since I have a post hole digger, I thought I would attempt to build a lifter using the PHD frame and boom. I did a search of the posts here and couldn't find a reference to such a project.

Has anyone done this? If so, could you please post your design and what you would do differently? If not, you could always try to convince me that it's a harebrained scheme that I shouldn't waste my time on/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif or help out with some suggestions.

I was thinking of attaching two lengths of 1 inch angle iron to the harrow. They would be parallel to the harrow's draw bar , one at the back end, one in the middle. I would put a loop of some kind on the top bolt of the PHD boom and hook two short lengths of light chain from the loop to two points on the angle iron. The points would be 1/3 the length of the angle iron in from either end. The lengths of the chain would have to be such that the drawbar would come off the ground when the boom is raised and that the harrow would act normally when the boom is down.

I'm not sure how I would attach the angle irons. I suppose I could weld them to a few sections of the harrow. I'd put them on the tine side so they wouldn't interfere with smoothing.

Any suggestions, comments, warnings etc?

Matthew
