Has anyone from NYS experienced getting a homemade trailer over a 1000# licensed ? I stripped a camper trailer off the frame and put on a deck, it is a 6x16 tandem axle w/elec. brakes now I need to get it on the road. I know the state needs to inspect it also the DOT. Iam close to Rochester. I have called DMV but as always, thats like pulling teeth to get an answer, where do I go for the DOT inspection. I will post my pics when I get a chance.

Nice job. I am not in NY but here in Indiana we go to the BMV and get a form along with a VIN#. You then place that VIN# on the trailer per the instructions and fill out the from. You then call your local Police and they send a man out who checks the trailer over and signs the form. You then you go back to the BMV and you are issued a title and you get plates. You are then set. Once again nice trailer.

First you have to go to a state approved weigh station and have it weighed. You'll need a certified form from them. Then you need to determine it's carry capacity,(should be printed on the axles).

Your local DOT office should have a form you can fill out. They will assign you a ID# which you have to stamp into the trailer frame.

I did it several years ago and it's not too hard.

Get the form first and take it with you to the weigh station, if you are stopped by the police you can show them the form and you should be "ok".

Good timing!

I was looking up info yesterday and came across a NYS downloadable pdf form that you would use to have your homemade trailer registered.

While I cannot recall which site it was, you should be able to find it with a search.

I will try searching for it, but you will probably beat me to it if you are on anything faster than dial-up (which is what I have).

Hopefully I can post a link shortly.

PS ... that is one nice trailer!

Nice trailer. How much weight do you plan on hauling? The reason I ask is because without the camper on it how rigid is the frame? I don't know if that may cause you any problems with the DMV.

Good luck

Here in Indiana we have the BMV. Bureau of Motor Vehicles. This is all thanks to our make things easier Government.

Thanks for the responses, the NYS link was a big help, it appears that the state DOT issues me a VIN# after they inspect it. Heres some pics of the project, I stripped the frame and added supports. The most I had on it was my Kioti tractor with FEL and box blade. I would quess all of 3000# took it down the road with no problems. Now to get it legal.

If this was a camper should it already be titled as a trailer?

Here in VA a homemade trailer is one made from scratch..

Just curious

Not in NY Brian, just by changing the intended use of the trailer (camper to utility) also changes weight, the state sees it as a new build. That was my thought when I started the project. Now I am finding that I need to show receipts for materials and any add ons including the paint I use.

Excellent! You shouldn't have any trouble with the design or workmanship, you just gotta find the right person to talk to at the DMV.

Casey: when I registered mine I didn't have any receipts except for some incidentals like nuts and bolts, paint and some chain. I told them that the rest was made from stuff I had at home.

Another thought (better one this time I hope).. Check with a local salvage yard/body shop that rebuilds cars for the name of their DMV contact OR find out when the DMV person is going to be at the salvage yard to inspect vehicles and take your trailer to them..

Here in VA we have DMV agents that pretty much only do salvage inspections (determine whether it is salvage only, must have branded title, or clean title, title homemade builds, and titles inspections ) every day.. they practically live at salvage yards/body shops

Good luck

This is so they can make sure tax was paid on the parts......

In PA, it is all done in the mail. There is a form that you fill out and get signed by a trailer inspection mechanic and you send it in with pictures. I was told that half the time, they bounce them back and that the pictures better clearly show the safety chains and all lights!

I think you guys have it rough! Here, you just go weigh it, and if it is below 2K, they give you a tag. If it is over 2K, then it has to be assigned a VIN # and then you get a tag. A couple of trips around town, and your done.

I built one a few years ago using MH axles but had to replace the tires with DOT approved trailer tires. Its been over 10 years so rules may have changed, I'm sure fees did.

1) My local DMV was helpful and told me I had to go through Albany for an application for title and gave me Ph# to call. I called Albany and told them I was building a homemade trailer and was going to register it for 6K even though I was using 2 6K axles. They sent me an application.

2) Once built I had to make copies of all materials purchased showing I paid sales tax. If not they will make you pay sales tax based on their estimate. Also had to go have it weighed empty and get a certified copy of the weigh slip to send in with application. The local dump has a certified scale and didn't charge me to weigh it.

3) Send application with copies showing you paid sales tax on materials (mainly axles, tires and steel I bought) and the fee (I think it was $25.00 at the time) and weigh slip to Albany. I know title fees have gone up now. $50 just for title.

4) Albany scheduled an appointment to take trailer to DMV to inspect. (My closest office for this was on Taft Rd. Syracuse) The inspector checked my frame and welds, tires, lights, and a brake test, Then affixed a VIN# decal to my frame.

A few weeks later I got a title for the trailer showing it as a custom built.
I don't think I would do it again since it is a hassle and time consuming.

Out of curiousity, don't you have a title / registration for the camper you stripped? Or if not get a pencil tracing of the VIN on the frame and apply for a lost title / registration. It would be much easier doing that.
By the way you did a great job converting from your pics.

Here in Nebr, all I have to tell them is the size of the trailer and weight rating of the axle for a homemade trailer. Nobody even looks at it. Even factory trailers can be liscensed as an untitled trailer. Many people buy a factory titled trailer and don't even want to spend the $10 to transfer the title and just use them as untitled trailers. If I buy an untitled trailer, I just liscense it again as untitled without any questions. If you have the trailer model, company name and VIN, they will just put in information on the trailer liscense but can still call it untitled.

I'm gonna guess that the one in the background is your next project and will also be torn down into another tractor-haulin trailer ??? ;)
