Flail Mower Let's talk flail mowers

How fast can you go with a Flail mower? I just pooched another set of bearings in my rough cut mower that I pull behind the quad and I'm done with it. I'm usually going about 5 km an hour with it. That's about 3 miles an hour for you US guys. I've got rough terrain so I was thinking hammers on a flail when I pull the pin on one.

Good Morning Greenland South,

Your 5 Kilometers per hour ground speed for the flail mower is fine The question is whether you want another motorized tow behind or a integrally mounted rear flail mower powered by your mule- I am assuming the Mule in your Avatar is in your current stable or power equipment.

Please understand Myself and the other members of the community that have flail mowers want to help you in your decision with your needs and desired quality of cut.

With your regard to your mule:

As you want a Hammer type flail mower and as you have stated you have heavy brush to deal with I will make a suggestion for your end use:

The Land Pride Flail mowers have cast hammer flail knives ment for Orchard and Vineyard work and are ideal for heavy brush.

These specific Flail Mowers are designed and manufactured by Maschio and painted in the Land Pride colors.

The Maschio farm equipment company has been designing and building farm machinery for more than fifty years like so many other farm equipment builders in Europe

The added bonus of the Maschio Flail mowers is that they have a trash door that also allows you to open the the trash door and eject the material directly out through the rear trash door allowing the user to mow heavy brush.

The trash door is also a maintenance door allowing the replacement of the hammer knives without crawling under the flail mower or turning it on end to change the hammer knives.

You have to decide if you want a motorized towed flail mower to tow behind your quad bike or an Integral mounted PTO powered flail mower first.

The Wessex Brand of motorized brand of towed flail mowers offer the option/benefit of a 4 wheel system to allow the end user to use an SUV or tractor with 2 or 4 wheel drive and having the option of high floatation tires on heavy wheels and cup and cone bearings allows the machine to last for decades in heavy use.

The Broadmoore LTD. Company is based in England and is the parent company of Wessex due to the purchase of Wessex Farm Equipment about a decade ago.

The other brands offered are "Made In Italy" and do not have a four wheel support frame for thier flail mowers.

SO you have a bit of homework to do and you can ask questions and receive real world answers from flail mower owners.

Investing in a Land Pride Flail Mower will give you plenty of power and ability to mow heavy brush and heavy grasses.

image.jpegimage.jpegimage.jpegAfter talking to a Land Pride dealer in Alberta and finding out how many Canadian Pesos they want, that option is out. However this same dealer mentioned a local farmer that bought a new John Deere flail some years back and never used it. He took some pics when he delivered a new tractor last year. He didn't know the model, I haven't spoken to the farmer. Anyway he is looking for 5200 Canadian Pesos, that works out to about 3900 US. Opinions?

That JD looks like a medium duty flail similar to the Italian imports. Good quality but doesn't justify premium price. Caroni TM1900 available new for $2000 from AgriSupply. Similar units available from other manufacturers for roughly same price.

Way too much, it may have never been used but it's still used and looks like it sat outside for a while anyway. JD flails have a light gauge deck compared to some other brands.

That John Deere flail Mower is either JD 290 or 390 model, it looks like the wider JD390(8 foot width of cut) burn rubber and run over there to buy it, don't walk!

SO with the Canadian dollar being 76 cents for every US dollar your looking at $2,964.00 Canadian. I would raise a stink about theft at that price if you bought it before I got there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would run over there and pick it up before someone else does as the 390 down here is almost $10KUSD

At most your going to need a new parts and owners manual new Kevlar belts, an oil change with new 90 weight oil and a new PTO shaft.

Parts are available and at the value of the loony your better off buying what ever you need from a JD dealer in your neighborhood.

BUT in saying that, A V belts are metric and all bearings are metric and easily obtainable locally. As far as side slicers, scoop knives and knive hangers buying them from a JD dealer may offer you the better price per knife if you need them.

Bring it home, remove the V belt guard, steam clean it inside and out, check the knives and knife hangers buy some JD paint, Kevlar belts, add new oil, and sand it and paint it over the winter or sooner and you will have a $10KUSD flail mower come summer.

You may just need a new PTO shaft, New V belts and an oil change, Just be sure to remove the V belt guard and grease the fittings under the V belt guard that may be buried in rubber and grass dust.

Run, Don't walk there with your checkbook!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please don't hold it against me but good or bad I am a fan of the Ben Guyatt show :^)

Its a fall project it you want to have it steam cleaned to paint it JD Green.

Dont let this bargain slip from your hands!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Even though the stickers are sun bleached the JD ID plate should still be there.

Leonz, I'm surprised you think that mower is worth that much. Cosmetics are nothing but the overall construction doesn't appear much different than a medium duty Caroni. I can believe JD retail is $10K because they use special green paint made by soaking the dye from $100 bills. But, how is that mower functionally different from an Italian version?

Hello Island,

It is not functionally different at all, I just remember my dads JD290 being a great, solid, heavy flail mower and its there to be purchased today unless someone else purchases it before he gets there.....

My thoughts are simply that the mower is there and he could take it home tomorrow, pick up a new PTO shaft, gear oil, new V belts and JD paint at Farm and Fleet or Canadian Farm Supply, New knives and hangers if it needs them and have it almost ready to run by Friday without painting.

It is a steal at that price even with a new PTO shaft(which it needs anyway) and it will do everything he wants to do with it and also mow good sod using the same mower.

A days work to inspect it and get it ready with new replacement parts and he has a flail mower that will outlast his current mule and he can upgrade to a bigger frame size/HP without needing a larger replacement mower to match the HP frame size.

He can always sell it and get most if not all his investment back as it is very safe mower to operate in all conditions as we both know.

My thoughts anyway

I have a 390 JD flail, I paid around 6K Canadian for it new. Be careful with the JD dealership. it will cost you about a grand for a change over of cutters and d rings / hangers and bolts.. JD charges like half screwed buffalo's for their product..( I thought the green paint was expensive..try the Unpainted stuff!! LOL)utters in their catalog are like a buck and a half each their smooth cutters P/N 31900 are 2.58 each. Granted it is in US dollars and a full set will be substantial weight for shipping but I think a person is still money ahead going through Flail Master.. I am going to pull the trigger on a set for mine. I'll keep you posted..

Cheers

Roger
