Flail Mower Let's talk flail mowers

   / Let's talk flail mowers #3,121
I just talked to Agrisupply and asked if I could order a Caroni flail with the P rotor. The gal I spoke with said "no". She said they only sell Caroni's with the B rotor and do not accept special orders.

Assuming I was told correctly, does anyone know how to order a Caroni with the P rotor?

Joseph

If they are the dealer, they should have no trouble bringing in the mower you want. Why go to the trouble of changing all the blades and hoping you might get 1/2 price for the new take offs. If they still don't won't bring in what you want talk to Caroni and tell them they lost a sale because the dealer wouldn't order the mower you wanted.

One of the gents here sent me the name and email address for someone at Agrisupply that can help me if I decide to order a Caroni with the P rotor.

Jeff, Tractor Tools Direct sells Caroni flail mowers and if I remember correctly they show the P rotor on their website. I don't know how to show a link to them, really lucky to be able to find TBN with coaching. :D

From what I can tell, it looks like the P rotor is pretty much the B rotor but with scoop/hammers rather than clevis/blades.

Maybe not. The TM1900 P rotor has attachment points for 28 things. The B rotor has 56 attachment points.

All I see on their website is the Del Morino brand for ~$1,000 more than a Caroni.

No. Both have 28 attachment points. The P rotor has 28 scoop knives mounted. The B rotor has 28 clevises with two knives mounted on each so a total of 56 knives.

I cannot tell from the Caroni catalog photos of the B and P rotors if there are any differences at all. I suspect not.

It's a done deal. Just placed my order for a TM1900BSC from AgriSupply. Even with a $608 shipping charge to WA  this is still the best option. "No extra charge" for drop gate delivery.

I plan to use the OEM blades if the neighbors want me to mow their overgrown pastures and finish blades on our own place as I described a few posts ago. To make blade swapping less painful I'm thinking of using a 3/8 inch clevis pin (instead of a bolt) and not a cotter pin but the same kind of pin that I use on my 3-point. You just push those pins in and they stay in place. What are those called?

BTW, some pacific northwest ag shops are selling AgriEase mowers. They are simply a rebranded TM1900BSC. Asking price is in the $4,000 range.

You cannot use the simple clip pins or standard clevises to hold flail blades in place. For starters they are not nearly strong enough as they are mild steel rather than the specified grade ?5 or 8 bolts. Also, mowing will knock those pins out when you run over a stick or brush or even a clump of earth. I wouldn't trust any clip type pin or even the type that splits and bends. Use hardened bolts with locknuts.

OK, proper nuts and bolts. I'm convinced.
It was just wishful newbie thinking.

Actually the Clevis/Cotter pin combination works very well and is much easier to install or remove than nuts & bolts. My Mott 72 has 92 mounting stations with 184 knives and it only takes about 3 hours to remove and replace ALL of the knives. Additionally, the only tool you need is a pair of needle nose pliers - maybe a small hammer if the clevis pin is rusted or has grass wrapped around it.

What grade clevis pins does the Mott use?

I replaced all of the clevis pins with ones I bought from FlailMaster, mainly because they were inexpensive. I have 50+ hrs on them now and there have been no issues.

Does anyone have an extra extension tube for the gear box to sell? I understand that when you buy this from British Metrics you have to buy 2.

If not, I will buy 2 and have one to sell.

Also, could someone please post the FlailMaster part # for the shackle and knives that work with the Caroni B rotor?

Update:
I ordered 2 of the extension tubes. Send me a PM if you would like to buy the extra one at cost + shipping.

Here are some FlailMaster part numbers.

M-108381 Replacement for the OEM Y blade on the B rotor. You need 2 per attachment point.

M-100761 Clevis for B rotor. This is too wide and so either needs to be ground down or pinched. DaNag said:
Put the head of a M10x80mm bolt in a vice, toss on the clevis and some strategically placed washers, attach a nut to the opposite side of the clevis and go at it with a ratchet/socket. Bends without much effort at all.

Looked up the bolts I use for attaching modified Flailmaster clevis to Caroni rotor: 3/8-16 coarse thread 2.75 inches long. Grade 8. Use matching nylock nuts. Advantage of the 2.75" bolts is that there is virtually no threaded area exposed to high speed debris once the nuts are in place. That makes them MUCH easier to remove than the factory supplied bolts. I didn't buy the bolts and nuts from Flailmaster. Invoice in photo below shows one internet source but even A box store should have them.

Mott uses special cotter pins that are flat on one side. The flat side goes against the mount, so it's easy to the bend the other side 45 deg. without the pin turning. That's all they need and there's millions of them installed on Mott/Alamo flails with no problems. If you're hitting big rocks and debris with the rotor, losing cotter pins is the least of you worries.

With my ford 918h, it has the nut and bolt style. (Much easier than my Mott but and bolt style) but it is still a pain.

Is there a way I can change it to the cotter pin style like the motts that use that style? Anyone ever gone from a nut and bolt to a cotter? (On any flail)

In another forum I learned that the bolt used on the Caroni TM1900 is class 8.8 which corresponds to about SAE 5. I have looked online for class 5 clevis pins without much luck unless you want to spend $$$ for stainless.

Bummer, how much was it going for ? Could be worth it
