Killing ants Update

I sprinkled so much SEVEN on the ant mounds that it looked liked it had snowed. It was on there about six days and then we got a light shower. Went back two days later and the ant were crawling everywhere. So much for using Seven on ants. Guess I'll have to go to plan "B". RRM

I like Amdro too. But, whatever you use is a temporary fix. At least around here. You can run them off for a while but like McArthur and Arnold, they'll be back.

When I was a kid we used to chase ants around with a magnifying glass with the sun focused on them..they made a satisfying pop/sizzle when you got one Of course there is Karma, maybe that's why I'm pretty allergic to ant bites now

I though Amdro only worked on fire ants, doesn't seem to kill the other types of ants.....Orthene gets them all, but boy does it ever stink

I remember using some very heavy oily liquid chemical when I live on the Florida panhandle. You poured it next to the opening and let the fumes run down into the hole. It killed the whole mound in minutes. But, that stuff was kind of scary and I didn't buy any more after it was gone. I have no idea what it was. Never seen it again.

Kinda seems to me that if it works it's off the market now. Nursery man buddy of mine says he has some diazion??? (or how ever you spell it) says it got wet and he can't use it. Said stop over and it's mine. I think i'll try it and see how it works. Thanks for your imput. RRM

Watching discovery channel the other night - we should be glad we arent in Australia - The have a menace called the "jack jumper" basically it sends you to the hospital or the african Driver ant, locally known as 'Siafu' which basically will devour anything in its path -

I wonder if Sevin will work on those buggers? nah bring out mother natures finest defense - FIRE!

I had no idea diazinon was taken off the market. I use it around the outside of my house for roach and general bug control. It worked extremely well. Fortunately I have a big bottle of concentrate in the rusty metal cabinet, in the dark dusty closet in the back corner of my garage....probably with a lot of other now illegal toxins, poisons and chemicals.

But I'm not sure how well diazinon will work on fire ants. I never used it for that.

I'm no toxicologist but I still remember a friend of mine, a very laid back, happy go lucky guy that nothing bad ever happens too, getting diazinon or some other acetylcholinesterase inhibitor all over him when he was trying to get the fleas and roachs out of his heavily infested dog pen. His wife and I (both medical students) kept suggesting he be careful. I'm not the most cautious guy in the world with pesticides but he was geting this stuff all over himself. Well, he finsished up and came inside and didn't go shower. About 30 minutes later he starts up with all the typical cholinergic side effects we'd read about in the text books. Excess salivation, blurred vision, some stomach cramps headache, a little slurred speech. Good old Ron just laughs it off, but we at least made him take a shower. A few hours and a few beers later and he was just fine.

I use liquid Sevin and it's very deady to them when it's 1st applied but it soon looses it's potency and really has no lasting effects.
And yep, they do come back.

I still have some diazinon. it works great.. unfortunately.. like other methods.. it's a monthly thing.

Another option is to find a do-it-yourself pest control place and buy up some mix for spraying under slabs.. like 'demon' It has decent 'staying' ability.. and does a number on things with more than 2 legs ( and fish )..

Not permanenet, but fun. Toss a few fire crackers in the mound and walk away. Next day, after they build over the firecrackers, lite em off. I suggest making a hasty retreat after lighting, as fire ants don't like to fly.
