That happened here in Nevada, not far from where I live. Some friends of mine found the van with the lady in it while hunting for sheds. Remains of her husband were found a year or so later up under a pinyon pine where he had taken shelter, by one of my coworkers who was elk hunting.
Not exactly the kinds of treasure one usually seeks while out and about.

Anyone that complains about GPS failures has not had the "pleasure" of relying on paper maps and no cell phones to find locations/businesses.

Try to imagine driving a truck and not knowing exactly what exit, streets, etc., to get to some location. You get on the CB and ask for help which mostly got plenty of replies. However, your driving, maybe in heavy traffic, your trying to digest or write down the info. It may be unsafe to pull over.

I used to seek out city or local maps. If available, those were like gold.
Agree that paper maps leave much to be desired at the local level, but IMHO they can't be beat for getting the big picture on a road trip.
I have a standalone Garmin GPS I use on road trips, partly to find end destinations and partly to display details on where I am at a given time. Still wouldn't want to be without a road atlas for plotting a route.
I'd never heard of WAZE before this thread, but if, like is implied it "phones home" with your location/route, that's a hard "no way".

They all "phone home" so to speak. Thats how they get the live traffic data, from speeds of phones traveling on the road. An important note, you dont need to use an app, your phone, tablet, vehicle, are all live tracked, for use in GPS routes, traffic signal timing, regional transportation management center, ect.

Sure, if you drive something pre 08, have No phone, or anything else with a simcard, you can be under the radar to an extent; but with Flock LPRs and vehicle fingerprinting, your still tracked

True within civilization, but out here where I have to drive more than 30 miles to see a traffic light, you still slide under the radar. ;)

Then again seeing more than 2 cars on 30 mile trip or waiting on one at an intersection constitutes a traffic jam

Oh, we haven't even brought up the grandma mafia... dang Stasi; they will report you to the authorities faster than anyone. :)

Atleast as a kid, you'd catch an ass wooping without even knowing what you had done, and somehow word got home, before you did....

Was it State Farm, that Texas AG is working on now that bought access to track their customers phones, without permission? Maybe they was Gieco?

Probably a lot less so, than you think. The signal strength required to support voice or live data is likely an order of magnitude stronger than the minimum signal strength required to receive an occasional ping that maintains some continuity of location. So most of the time your phone is showing a signal too weak to make calls or stream data, it may still succeed in at least handshaking some distant cell tower.

Would this be for the purpose of denying customer claims based on travel speed data, etc?

But my phone is attached to wall (copper) no GPS , the Magnum has GPS but the maps are from 2006 so pretty much useless and not used.
I crushed my Cell in 2007 and have no use for one.

My understanding, the claim is it was to adjust the rates of drivers based on the driving (speed, times, frequency)

So, apparently, or allegedly, Allstate paid app developers to include data tracking and back doored that info to Allstate to base rates on. S

I quit driving to Dallas for work and asked about getting my insurance rate dropped. State Farm wanted to put a GPS tracker in my truck. I said no. It was very difficult to keep from cussing at them when on the phone after that response.

My work truck has a GeoTab plugged in at all times to monitor my driving on the clock.

It's always very satisfying to tell them to cancel your policy, but unfortunately nearly impossible to be prepared to do so real-time, during an interaction like this. It loses its punch, when you have to call back a week later to cancel with a cooler head, after making other arrangements. :ROFLMAO:

Something resonates laying out the auto club map on the kitchen table planning a road trip…

Always kept with the route and stops highlighted for posterity.

Had some nice National Park trips and saw lots of pretty country…

As a kid I was often tagged as navigator and at the ready with the map folded and on a clipboard.

You'd probably like the Golden Globe Race, a non-stop solo circumnavigation race that is administered with zero screens, zero comm's, and basically no communication or navigation technology newer than paper charts and a sextant. It's not as crazy extreme as some other races (e.g. BT Global Challenge), this is more of a "Zen" crowd, but still a huge challenge for the competitors.

Due to the number of major catastrophes in recent years, there is typically a device from which each competitor must send a single text message each day, letting organizers know they're still alive and in the race. But this device cannot be used to request weather or any other information that might aid in their circumnavigation.

Anyone know since 2014 every new car in the US has an edr aka a black box that stores accident info occasionally used to reconstruct accidents. Anyways I used "snapshot" plug in obd driving recorder from progressive in the winter when it first came out. I was docked several times for rapid acceleration and rapid decelerations. No kidding, anyone who's ever driven on snow and ice covered roads will occasionally briefly spin the tires when starting off from a stop sign. Occasionally lock the tires even with abs. I dropped progressive after I got my report from them.

I volunteered to sign up for my 1985 3/4 truck and was told not eligible… go figure?
