JD 1020 Hydraulic filter problem

Well, I tried changing the fluid and filter this week.
Fluid went okay - filter - not so much.

It is in a steel bell housing under the transmission and held in place by a bolt through the center with a gasket around the rim and the whole thing is under spring pressure.

I could not seat the housing correctly without cutting the gasket (2 tries). Leaks like a river.

What is the trick (if any) to getting this to seat correctly?

Did you put the quad ring up in the trans case(using a dab of grease to hold it in place) or rest it on the filter cover and try to install quad ring and filter cover at the same time??????????
