Didn't think my wife had it in her, but she found me a 1/2" sheet of steel for a welding tabletop. Haven't seen it yet, will take some pics later after we go pick it up.

No pics, it got dark before we got back. But it's 2'x8' and already has pipe legs welded onto it. I really don't need one that long. Seeing as it's kinda narrow, I thought about cutting it in half and rewelding it to make a 4x4 table. Just don't know if my welding skills are up to doing a 1/2" thick butt weld.

Another possibility is cut off 3 feet and weld that on the side so you have an L shaped bench 3 feet of it would be 4x4 and 2 feet would be narrower. That way you could reach into the center easier for some things. I've done similar for woodworking tables and desk. Something to consider. Goodluck!

Oh give me a break! Nothing to it, you can handle the welding. No one says you have to weld overhead. Bevel both sides, tack both sides real good, weld a little on one side, flip it over and weld some on that side. Repeat as many times as necessary.;)

Not to steal the thread, but question for you Shield Arc, when you flip the sheet over do you weld directly opposite of what you just welded,or do you weld in a completely different area. Also correct me if I'm wrong, but this is to control warpage right? Thanks

when you flip the sheet over do you weld directly opposite of what you just welded,

That's what I'd do! Also keep an eye on it with a good straight edge. If it curls one directions, put more weld on the other side to pull it back. No need to be in a big hurry with the welding, let it cool, or you will warp it. But then we can straighten it too. ;)

Yeah, fer sure! And you can't accuse her of 're-gifting' a Christmas present with that one either..

Happy birthday Ian.

Welding bench tops need not be solid, and you could frame it up leaving a 1/2" gap in the center for attaching clamps using T-slot fittings or other methods of your choice.

That will allow you to exert force in places other than near the table edges.

Many fabricators spend serious money on Acorn tables (look 'em up, and contemplate the attachments too) instead of plain tops.

Ok, Ok... I did manage to get it into the barn, but was too lazy to go back down there with a camera.

nice find! the metal sounds like a good deal too! ;)

That looks like a winner to me. Why cut it? Narrow is usually easier to store away.

Looks great. Nice present

If you do want to tinker with it I think the L shape sounds better than the 4x4 IMO.

Haywire what's under that table far as bracing? Any C-channel, or angle iron between the pipe legs?
The frame work under my table was a table I built for a large diesel drive welding machine I had, sold the machine but kept the table, worked out great to lay a piece of 3/4 inch plate on for a welding table.

I've got a set of legs with casters that I'm planning on using. The existing 2" pipe legs are going to the scrap pile. I think the final dimensions are going to be 40x48.
