Welding bench tops need not be solid, and you could frame it up leaving a 1/2" gap in the center for attaching clamps using T-slot fittings or other methods of your choice.

That will allow you to exert force in places other than near the table edges.

Many fabricators spend serious money on Acorn tables (look 'em up, and contemplate the attachments too) instead of plain tops.

That looks like a winner to me. Why cut it? Narrow is usually easier to store away.

If you do want to tinker with it I think the L shape sounds better than the 4x4 IMO.

Haywire what's under that table far as bracing? Any C-channel, or angle iron between the pipe legs?
The frame work under my table was a table I built for a large diesel drive welding machine I had, sold the machine but kept the table, worked out great to lay a piece of 3/4 inch plate on for a welding table.

I've got a set of legs with casters that I'm planning on using. The existing 2" pipe legs are going to the scrap pile. I think the final dimensions are going to be 40x48.
