a 4" wide trench is plenty wide to put a 1" water line in, but is a biach to back fill and any remove spoils by hand via a 4" treching shovel. If i do it again id go min 6" no matter how thin my pipe/wire was.
(lowes only has 4" and 5")
Do NOT, i repeat DO NOT fool with a 2 wheel trencher, they suck, you WILL want a 4 wheel walk-beside (or ride on) version. (ask me how i know)

It would seem to me that even a 2 wheel trencher would beat a shovel.

I have a ground source heat pump in my house ( waterfurnace ) with 1750" of buried pipe in the back yard, I would recommend keeping to water line as far away from the ground source lines as possible. As it was explained to me, as the winter goes on since the furnace is removing heat from the ground in the area of the loop the frost will actually travel deeper in the ground than in the surrounding areas. The contractor I used basically said that there would be a block of ice around the tubing at the end of the heating season, and that the furnace system would become less efficient as the winter went on as the frost penetrated lower in the ground. I would consult with the furnace manufacturer.

Toolaholic, I'll be using 4 800ft loops of 3/4 pipe in parallel, all hooked up to a 1 1/4 manifold. You're right that it would be difficult to pump through a single 3200 foot long loop. What type / brand drill rig did he purchase? I tried to find a drilling contractor, but the only ones I found locally used very large rigs that I would not consider trying to get into the back yard.

Royz, great point on the freezing near the geo lines. With a designed entering water temp as low as 35 degrees, the exiting temps will definitely be below freezing! So I'm reconsidering the whole idea of sharing trench space for a water line...I will contact the HP manufacturer to get their advice.

thanks all...
