I am looking for a 5-6 foot bushhog. A friends dad has a Howse model 500 5 ft. From what I can tell it is an economy or light duty mower. I dont cut a whole lot but want something that wont require constant maintenance and will last a while. It is in average condition for a 4-5 yr old mower and he wants $450. What do you think of this make and model and the price?
thanks,

That's a decent economy mower. I'd check the gearbox for leaks and see if any water in gearbox oil. Check out the stump jumper, blades, and bottom shaft. I'd also change the gear oil in it regardless of condition, and give it a good greasing.

If everything checks OK and it'll cut what you need, I'd say that's not a bad price. New ones around here run $600-700, depending on who'll cut you a deal.

If you need parts, you'll have to get Howse parts. A good local dealer is a lot better than trying to order straight from Howse Implement.

My dad has one he bought new 3 or 4 years ago and hasn't had any problems. I think he paid about $550 for his then.

thanks,

Seems a little expensive to me, you can get a new one for $150 more. Unless it is in impeccable condition, I would pass.

Where you buying new 5' howse ( or kk ) mowers for 550. They are at least 600+ in my neck of the woods.

I bought a KK from TSC in 2000.. it was 500$ then..

It was bought at the Buckatunna feed store in Buckatunna, MS. They are currently out of business.
Time marches on and prices go up Soundguy.:)
