No offense but when I hear things like: "Once there're eggs or chicks, (active nest) you can't legally touch it."
I always laugh.
A Barney Fife clone jumps out of the bushes, piston drawn. Sirens...cops pouring in with machine guns and tear gas.

Yeah, I know. Thems just the laws. We're a cafeteria-style society when it comes to picking and choosing which ones we want to obey.

I have seen people put up plastic models of predatory birds (owls) on boat docks, presumably to keep martins away. Don't know if it works.
Mine is very convincing - the head swivels and everything. $29 at the TSC store. After I put it up though I kept craving a tootsie roll tootsie pop

Yep! I see it's very convincing.
There's only one bird sitting on the fence rail. There could be 2 or 3+. 🤣

It only applies to migratory waterfowl, iirc.

There is a very large renovated barn, about 60ft x 80ft x 40+ ft ht that's full of birds...barn swallow I think. Bird droppings everywhere, Gambrel roof style no coupolas. Anyone know how you could keep them out? It's full of rafters very high up, has hay loft with end doors, very large drive through ground level with rolling double doors each end. I think impossible to seal doors and stall windows tight. Hundreds of birds, mostly mud nests on walls & high up.
Way too much for cats plus they couldn't get up where they are I'm thinking.
Falcons, Owls, Netting, BBs, .22 w/rat shots, smoke...
most any irritant. you keep them pissed enough they will leave. Just start next year before they start nesting.

have you asked Jeeves? or local pest control?

Jeeves says he only knows about serving tea and answering the door.

Thanks @MossRoad

That's crazy. No way pigeons or sparrows should be protected from anything. Flying rats.
My wife's grandpa said they survived the great depression partially by eating lots pigeons. They had a large pigeon nesting house in the yard on the farm. After the pigeon chicks hatched, they'd kill all but one chick, and tie a string around its foot to a peg in the nest box. The parents would feed it and since there was only one, it got pretty fat pretty quick. Then they'd harvest them. They'd do that several times a year.

Swallows don’t cause huge problem in barn , ignore them
A health hazard.
After discussing with my wife we're leaning towards not purchasing anyway. At our age it's a bit much and she would not want to give up our place.

I hired a pest control company to keep birds out of 2 open pole barns behind the plant. The put some kind of sticky paste on horizontal surfaces up high; it works.

It is amazing the small opening these birds can find to access a garage/barn. It would be nearly impossible to seal that barn up enough to exclude them. Hopefully one of these other suggestions work. I think a combination of them would be best, I think you gotta keep them guessing. That is a beautiful barn, seems sad to see it all crapped up.

I have a number of bushy cedars by the driveway that I was going to trim'
I was going to remove some of the ground level branches so the rider cab pass between the trees.
However...
There's a bunny nesting there and a number of birds higher up so I'm just going to leave it be for now.
It would look nicer and be more convenient but I don't want to be known as a heartless landlord.;)(y)

Long story...but now I can tell the short version.
Wife & I lived here 45 years, we love the country life but too many people encroaching, too much traffic. We still love being on a secondary road still nice & now grocery, hardware, tractor supply, etc. 5-10 minutes away.
This place is available 16 miles (30 minutes) away, 125 acres off of a paved road almost no traffic. New 4.3ft home (never lived in) way off so completely quiet. All around 100s acres in conservancy. Too much to describe, 17 horse stalls, stocked pond, water & power everywhere, 1 arena is an acre. Large streams.
Google this address:

4178 Headens Bridge Rd
Bedford, Va. 24523

I couldn't sell our current place, wife loves it. So at 72 & 71 I can't imagine 2 places. We wouldn't rent either home. I could buy it no problem.
About 100 acres in hay, some in fenced paddocks. Someone could board horses, rent stalls, sell hay. There's water everywhere & wells. 22KW generator. State of the art obstacle course for horse training (only one in Virginia...it was about a Mil).

Looks like Heaven. Birds in the barn would seem to be a small issue compared to one or two people taking care of the rest of the place. But maybe if one could afford the place they would also have hired hands.
