JD4710
It is laying on it's side. How big of a winch does it take to pull it back upright? Was considering pulling on the loader mount at mid tractor.

Not sure about the size of the winch you need, maybe post some pictures so experienced members can best help you in that area. Whatever you do once you get it back on its wheels, do not try to start it right away, or serious engine damage will occur. Take your time, read up on this subject as much as you can, and again, do not try to start it before going thru a specific procedure. If you get in to much of a hurry, and try to start it without going thru several very important steps, SEVERE ENGINE DAMAGE WILL OCCUR, AND IT WILL BE VERY COSTLY !

Glad you weren't seriously injured. You don't necessarily need a winch. A ratcheting come-a-long will easily right that tractor. I think I would also secure the high side with a strap or two to ensure the tractor doesn't flop the other way while pulling it over.

As BleedingOrange points out, DO NOT start it without checking a few things. I've never had to do it, but I'm sure some experienced folks here can guide you through the process.

I would pull at the loader mount and the top of the ROPS with the strap going OVER the rear tire. The tire sticks out far enough to keep the strap off the fender. Set the brake to keep the tire from rotating when pulling.

Wow! That sure looks like a major pucker incident. As @ruffdog says, use both the ROPS and the loader tower. The tower may not have much strength to lateral forces so I'd use the ROPS for the most pull. Some safety line wouldn't hurt either--So it doesn't finish rolling down that hill.

Two suggestions: If you can get it started back on it's feet with a jack, the required pulling force will be much less. Also, use a restraint strap to keep it upright when it does get near the level position. I see tractors can keep going if you pull too fast and on a slope. This happens because as the C.G. goes over center, it will start accelerating in the oppose direction and the loaded tires may start to slide rather than stay put. AG tires are intended to slide rather than dig in when side loaded. This could (theoretically) prevent it from rolling onto the pulling vehicle if it gets away from you. A few Youtube videos on how NOT to do it !

BTW: I suggest you pull from the rear wheel. Loop a strap thru the rim space. The loader MOUNT might be the one that complains. If you do use the loader side frame, chain both of them together to share the load.

Glad that you are here to post your question. I'm sure that you had to change your shorts after that.

A JD 4710 comes in at North of 2 tons, with loader.

Pulling it upright should take less than it would take to lift it. (angles, forces, physics, and math)

Anything you can do to "lift" while turning will be a good thing. Cut a ten foot log and notch the end for a cable ??
Multiple fixing points to the tractor will be a good thing.

Trees on the up hill side for anchors? Or will you roll it down hill? That seems like a major decision.

As already said, top of rops is a good pulling point. Also make sure you set the parking break before righting it!

I've got trees to anchor it. Don't plan on rolling down hill. Will have to tow it uphill once it is upright.

It is Important to have a plan!

From my take on the pics, The tractor needs to roll UPHILL about 130 degrees. That is likely the full weight of the tractor for about 6 or 7 feet of pull.

A few come alongs will do the job, but the pull distance is going to be a challange.

Power pulls/ cable pull equipment might be the best option for a DIY (re-sell the investment afterwards)

I'd be concerned with just pulling on it that it might just slide up the hill on its side ... If there is a way to chain down the lower rear tire at what will be the bottom when it's back up, so it stays put ...

Also jacking the lower side up first may put some weight on the bottom of the what's now the bottom tire before pulling on it.

Looks like the seat took quite a hit!

From the pictures, the slope doesn't look that steep. If you don't mind could you dissect what happened. Wheel in hole, loader too high, more slope that it looks like???? I just try to learn as much as I can from others.

You probably didn't plan on putting it on its side either, but things happen. You need to get it on its tires as soon as possible. But safely.

Either hire it out or do it with help. But prepare for unexpected movement.

Glad you are here to post about it instead of someone else posting a link to TV news!

Seeing it in real life would be helpful and perhaps change my mind. Just looking at the pics, here's what I'd do:

As mentioned, make sure that when it gets upright it can't roll. I've seen several videos where a successful recovery became unsuccessful when the equipment rolled away.

Have a look at the lower part of the loader mount for a starting anchor point. Even if it won't be enough to right the tractor, it is currently a higher point and should help to start rotating the tractor.

The ROPS - particularly high on the ROPS - looks like a great place to anchor. You'll need to have something to prevent the choker / soft shackle / whatever from sliding down the ROPS as pulling force is exerted. The way the tractor now lies the effect of pulling on the ROPS really wouldn't be different from puling on the rear wheel until the tractor rotates beyond the point where the cable no longer touches the rear tire. If you do connect to the rear wheel to pull it, either hook near the bottom or somehow prevent the wheel from rotating. If you connect high on the wheel it'll likely rotate to the bottom as you pull and it'll surprise you.

It looks like the loader might be lower than the bottom plane of the tires and if so it could act to help resist rolling the tractor back up. If it looks like that is the case, maybe you could jam the joystick into the float position or hook a paracord to it so it could be pulled from a safe distance.

Scotch the wheels your pulling it up on. They will slide and your just be dragging the tractor. Slides with it on just the edges of the tires. Normal to happen.
